I •• r«5=^5-} ^ f 1 flit • --» • ©~*~• --» • « f I W 4#* W Mi I IT'S POPPIN' TIME AQAIN From The Desk Of Illinois State Council On Nutrition +9 by Virginia Hill a Popcorn has been a Christmas tradition since the Pilgrims first harvested corn. This molded popcorn "candle" is a personal, creative touch that even the busiest of -us can take time to make -- it's so quick, easy and economical made with pop-in-the package popcorn. Just follow the recipe below and pack the popcorn into cans of various sizes such as the tall sauce cans from packaged dinners, shorter cans of spaghetti and the smaller cans that frozen juice comes in. They are such fun to make, the children will want to join in the holiday spirit and help. The "candles" can be trimmed with a pretty ribbon of any color that's left over from package wrapping, and used as a trim for the mantelpiece or as a centerpiece for the holiday table. They also make lovely gifts with a personal touch that says how much you care. This year why not bring the tradition of popcorn to your home whether as popcorn balls, garland around the tree, or as brightly decorated candles. HOLIDAY POPCORN "CANDLES" 1 package (5 oz. or 142 g)' Popcorn 1 cup (240 ml) sugar 1/2 cup (120 ml) corn syrup 1/2 cup (120 ml) water 1/4 cup (60 ml) butter or margarine Extra utensils needed: Empty sauce can, canned pasta can or juice can. Prepare popcorn according to package directions. Place "VITAMIN EVERYTHING" What keeps you sexy; relieves or prevents heart disease, sterility, muscular weakness, cancer, ulcers, skin disorders, burns and shortness of breath; promotes physical - en durance; protects against the health-related effects of air pollution; and slows the aging process? Is it thiamine, riboflavin or pyridoxine? No, it's "supervitamin", more commonly known as vitamin E or tocopherol. If I'm being facetious, it is because I had to point out that this one vitamin is being promoted as a general "cure-all" - for everything. Are there proven benefits from vitamin E? Yes, for premature infants with hemolytic anemia, for patients with malabsorption problems, and for patients w i t h i n t e r m i t t e n t claudication, calf pain. What about other claims? Many claims have been made, but clinical data to back up the claims are lacking. Is it effective in treating sexual dysfunction? Rats fed a vitamin E deficient diet do indeed become sterile. Human testing is com plicated since much of human sexuality is psychological and placebo effects are strong and variable. Some instances of beneficial effects have been reported, but overall it would not appear that vitamin E is of any value in preventing male impotence or sterility or in altering the outcome of pregnancy. Is it effective in heart conditions? Although an occasional study reports positive results, the majority show vitamin E to be inef fective in treating or preventing heart disease. However, the question of effect on circulation is still unresolved because vitamin E does produce a reduction of symptoms of intermittent claudication. Is it effective in athletic ability, aging and cancer? There is no strong evidence that vitamin E improves athletic ability, slows aging or protects against cancer. Is it effective against air pollution? Animal ex periments suggest that vitamin E may provide protection against lung damage, but additional studies are still needed. Is overdosage dangerous? There is no evidence at the present time that tocopherols are toxic. popcorn in large pan or bowl. Heat sugar, corn syrup, and water in sauce pan to 250°-260°F (120°C) or until a drop of the syrup in cold water forms a hard ball. Remove from heat and stir in the butter. Pour over the popcorn and mix thoroughly with a large spoon. The coated popcorn is now ready to form into the "candles." Grease the inside of can thoroughly. Grease your hands also. Working quickly, pack the popcorn tightly into the cans. Allow popcorn to sit for 15 minutes. Remove the popcorn "candles" from the can/s and place on plate or tray. Now each "candle" may be decorated with bows and holly leaves to look even cheerier than real lighted candles. lfrSTyT^JaTT*T*TaaY^l M si " I rial JI 6 FREE (When you purchase a dozen donuts.) Does vitamin E do anything? Yes, vitamin E acts to stabilise membranes of all of your cells and protects them froiri degeneration. In many ways, vitamin E is still a mystery vitamin. Scientific research has provided hints of utility in a wide variety of areas, but we still need to learn much. In the meantime, include vegetable oils or margarine made from vegetable oils, cereal grain products, meat, eggs, dairy products and green leafy vegetables in your diet. The oils are the richest sources of vitamin E, but the rest of the foods mentioned also provide significant amounts. And until more evidence is in - a nice quiet weekend away from the kids may do some of the things this supervitamin is credited with. HOSPITAL NOTES MCHENRY Admissions: Rita Grether, Robert E.
