C. - Roberto Duran shocked mil lions, especially devoted fans, when he quit in the eighth round of his second fight with Sugar Ray Leonard. One suspects Duran, with much Latin macho, knew he wouldn't win the fight-and couldn't bear to be seen on television battered about in the late rounds. Other fighters have quit, and it really isn't new. Muhammad Ali wanted to quit in his first fight for the title against Sonny Liston, but was talked out of it in his corner. Liston then quit. Duran says he had stomach cramps and was too weak to go on. And one must accept that explanation, in part. He certainly hadn't taken a bad beating at the time of his decision, and was very much in the fight. On all three cards, the scoring was close. What leads one to the conclusion he knew he wouldn't win is his retire ment statement immediately after the fight. He's almost 30 and beyond his peak. Sugar Ray, again the welter champ, is stUl coming on, and is under 25, the usual peak age of fighters. The guess is that Roberto took this second fight pri marily for the $8 million he would earn (a good enough reason). And who can say it wasn't a smart decision? Too many fighters go on too long. In retrospect, Duran put on a tremendous performance in beating Leonard in Montreal earlier this year. He could never top that. No one is likely to administer another beating to Leonard any time soon. CoMWIad The discomfort created by a brisk winter wind can make a liar out of the thermometer. For instance, a 30-mile-per-hour wind combined with a tempera ture of 30 F can have the same chilling effect on the body as a -2 F reading. Esther Schneider phoned to say the Leon Haydams have a "baby boy athlete". Told her I thought she had the wrong department, but it had all been decided. The proud daddy was otir mail carrier for many years, a sports fan and booster of S.I.H. No way could I shift the story. We wish the parents and the young athlete the best of everything. It should be a great Christmas. Going through a super market made me wonder how many thousand items they set out to tempt the shoppers. It would take a strong- willed person to make out a list of needed items, then follow the list without picking up extra items so temptingly set before your eyes. _ As great as those super markets are, I still recall days in the old country stores when the clerk on the other side of the counter picked a can of beans off the shelf and ground coffee for you by hand-turning a big wheel. Memories take me back to my parents' cellar, stocked with home canned fruits and vegetables during the summer to carry the family through the long winter.
