On the bright side, no ozone yellow alerts were issued during the season for the first time since 1976 when current alert procedures were adopted and peak hourly concentrations continued to decline from the record high level of 266 parts per billion (ppb) measured in Waukegan in 1977. Ozone health advisories were issued on 72 of the 153 days in the season for various parts of the state, representing 47 percent of the season. A health ad visory is issued for an air quality region when ozone concentrations reach 70 ppb for a two-hour average and weather conditions are such that the levels are expected again the following day. All 37 monitoring sites operating throughout the ozone season registered violations of the Illinois ozone air quality standard of 80 ppb not to be exceeded more than one hour. Ad ditionally, 21 of the sites measured levels exceeding the federal standard of 120 ppb not to be exceeded more than one hour. "The 1980 data shows ozone continuing to be the most widespread air quality problem in Illinois," said Dave Kolaz, manager of the ambient air monitoring We Cordially Invito You f CHURCH OF CHRIST 401 N. "By and large it was an immini year in that weather conditions were such that the northern half of the state had decidedly better air quality situations than the southern half. "While the northern part had more days with cloudy skies, cooler temperatures and moderate precipitation, the southern half had a greater number of days with sunny skies, low wind speeds and warm temperatures with limited pollutant mixing," he said. Ozone is a secondary pollutant formed by a complicated photochemical reaction between sunlight, warm temperatures, light winds with the presence of hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides in the atmosphere. • * • * Too much time is wasted in trying to get something for nothing.
