Winter Will Begin Dec. 21 Welcome or not, Old Man Winter will arrive in Chicagoland Sunday, Dec. 21, at 10:56 a.m., according to astronomers at the Adder Planetarium. Assoicate Astronomer James Seevers explained, "On the first day of winter, which is the time of the 'winter solstice', the sun will be farther south of the equator than on any other day of the year." For those who are not happy to see the arrival of winter, Seevers had some consolation, noting that the solstice is also the point at which the sun "starts back in the opposite direction.". "In the northern hemisphere days are the shortest of the year near the time of the winter solstice because the earth's north polar axis is titled away from the sun," he said. At the same time that the winter solstice occurs in the northern hemisphere, the summer solstice occurs in the southern hemisphere, marking the beginning of summer and the longest day of the year south of the equator. "Solstice" means "sun standing still". The word is used to describe the beginning of winter and summer because for several days before and after the solstices the altitude of the sun at noon changes so slowly that the sun appears to be standing still.
