In all three pictures, Woodstock's Joe Leahey was in the middle of the action, diving behind Bob Greve's last minute breakaway (above), scrambling for a loose ball held by McHenry's Mike Burgdorf (right), and giving up on an errant pass which was Intercepted by Bob Zeller and Bob Greve (below). STAFF PHOTOS-JOEL WAKITSCH Warriors The McHenry Warriors overcame a severe height disadvantage and stung the Woodstock Blue Streaks 61 to 55 in overtime Tuesday night at Buckner gym. The Warriors blew a 7 point lead in the closing minutes, and when Joe Leahy of the Streaks stepped to the foul line with one second remaining to shoot two free throws, it looked as if the Warriors would go down to defeat. However, the young lad from Woodstock missed both shots, and the Warriors outscored the Streaks 8 to 2 in the overtime to win 61 to 55. Woodstock using its height advantage managed to pull away to a four point lead in the closing minutes of the opening quarter and lead 18 to 14. The second period saw Bob Greve high scoring Warrior guard get into the act and with help from John Costigan, Bob Zeller and Joe Bauml the Warriors shot ahead at the intermission 31 to 29. The third period saw Bob Zeller come to the front, and the senior center of the Warriors slipped in 7 points to see the Warriors increase their lead to 42 to 37. In the final frame the Warriors twice managed to grab a 7 point lead, but the battling Streaks, with the bid of free throws came roaring back time and time again, and at 1:03 Joe Leahy's three point play put the Streaks ahead 53 to 51. Seconds later Bob Greve hit a 20-footer from the side to knot it again, and both teams lost two opportunities to gain the lead, until Leahy stepped to the line with one second In Overtime remaining. Missing both of his free throws put the game in overtime. In the overtime it was all Warriors. Greve put the locals ahead at 2:54 with a 15-footer, and at the 2:07 mark Zeller's layup gave the Warriors a 57 to 55 lead, as Lundstrom canned one from in close in between. That was all the scoring for the Streaks, as Zeller again hit the bucket, and John Costigan's two charity tosses with just thirteen seconds remaining wrapped up the Warrior victory. As Coach Ludwig said in the locker room after the game, "it was one to win", he went on to praise his boys, saying, "it was the best floor game they played this season." Indeed it was, as the Warriors showed great improvement from their loss to Jacobs last Friday night. Woodstock had twice as many turnovers, six coming in the first two minutes, as the pesky Warrior defense forced the Woodstock crew into numerous errors. Bob Greve led the scoring with 21 pts., Costigan and Zeller each picked up 15 points. Six foot seven Chuck Lundstrom led the Streaks with 14 pts. Under Dan Stanowski in the opening game of the season, the Skyhawks took a close 9-7 lead into the second quarter and a 20-18 lead into halftime. The third quarter was a different story, however as the Skyhawks took a commanding 36-25 lead into the final period. Coach Stanowski ex plained that "In the middle of the third quarter, we started to play good team defense and moved the ball well on offense. Then, Inge Dschida got hot and we pulled away." Besides Dschida, no other Johnsburg player scored in double figures as junior Sue Dehn put in seven points, while Cheri Kofler, Kim Grenman, Deanna Davis and Jane Pecucci all collected 3 points. Teri Jakubicek and Joan Pierce each had 2 points and Tracy Esposito chipped in a free throw during the win. "For the first game of the year, it was not a bad showing," Stanowski said. "I liked the way we played defense and the way the subs played." Stanowski was forced to use two sophomores who had only one varsity practice under their belt because both Kofler and Esposito fouled out, but he said he was pleased with the yound Skyhawk's performance. For Richmond, Jean Ozburn scored 17 and Lisa Harmon had 13. On Tuesday, however, only four Skyhawk players hit the net in the lopsided loss to Grant. Again, Dschida led Johnsburg with 18 points, while Tracy Esposito chipped in 6, Cheri Kofler had 5 and Kim Grenman had 4. Although Sue Dehn failed to score, she did gather a total of seven assists. Late in the first quarter, the Skyhawks were up 15-8 , but turned the ball over and let Grant back in the ball game at the quarter. Grant led 16-15. Grant pulled to a five point halftime lead as Johnsburg slowly folded in the second half. While Johnsburg tried to find a way to stop Grant's Stephanie Romic in the second half, they were able to collect only one offensive rebound in the half as Grant pulled away. "Grant was hungry for a win and we weren't," Stanowski admitted. "It's a shame that we executed some things better than in our win over Richmond, but didn't put desire with it." Johnsburg will now have a long layoff until Jan. 6 when Harvard will come to Johnsburg for the Skyhawk's first conference game of the season. Joel Wakitsch After an opening game loss to Lake Zurich by the score of 74 to 55, the McHenry high girls' basketball team of Coach Pat Wirtz defeated Wauconda 49 to 41 here on Monday night. The Warriors couldn't cope with the full court press, and missed starting guard Robin Geiger who did not play. Sue Haddick had 15 pts. followed by Karen Karpavicius with 12 and Terry Blume had 10. In the Wauconda game Debbie Koerber came off the bench to spark the Warriors with 14 pts. Her last second basket in the third period started a Warrior rally that paved the way to a victory. Debbie had 12 second half points, and was helped by Karen Karpavicius' 13 pts., and Sue Haddick had 10. The smaller Warrior squad outrebounded the taller Wauconda team with Terry Blume snaring 10 and Karen Karpvicius 9. Jenny Berryhill and reserve guard Kathy Bitterman also added to the victory.
