On The Sideline With Dick Rabbitt The Warriors did a complete turnabout this week. After struggling at Jacobs last Friday night, when they didn't set the world on fire, they came back to beat a tall talented Woodstock five in overtime 61 to 55. However, the Warriors will have to improve on their foul shoot ir* They SSrt PUl ""•y "rty » <hey could only Joe BaumlI did a fine job against the Streaks. Forgot to tell S.I.H. of the early starting time on Tuesday, but he managed to get in to see the Pom Pon squad, and then stayed for the rest of the game. He wasn't a jinx, so he is welcome for future games. Still don't know what Coach Ludwig would have done, if the Warriors had lo6t with the "Irishman" in the stands after missing the first two games. Hadn't heard about Dick Barrows, Larry Nimsgren and Charlie Corso's harrowing ex perience while fishing at McCullom Lake. The three adventurous sportsmen took off in a little tin boat to haul in some whoppers. The boat flipped and into the water they went. Dick's seamanship was questioned. Charlie couldn't swim. Luckily they were in shallow water so they could walk to shore. It will be water wings for those hardy outdoorsmen next time they venture forth. It is heart warming to know people think of others in a kindly way. The Friday Night Mixed League at Chapel Hill came up with a fine gesture. In stead of giving out prizes, they donated a tidy sum to Pioneer Center for the purchase of a rocking horse, high chair and other items needed in the rehabilitation and instructional work. Maybe the idea will catch on with other groups. We can't say City Father. Let's say City Mother in referring to Liz Nolan. Liz has spearheaded a drive to make McHenry known as The City Beautiful. Last summer it was flowers. Now it is decorated Christmas trees, a crib and other ideas in furthering the spirit of the season. Some people have donated trees and decorations. Some gave their time. There have been many nice comments on the efforts of Liz and her helpers. Commissioner Kuhn frowned on DeBartolo's connection with horse racing. All this time we thought betting at the tracks was legal. And, somewhere along the line, I heard that horse racing brings big money to the State of Illinois. Now, I am wondering if my baseball bets with John Busscher are legal*. We bet the whole sum of one dollar on the World Series. Reading those signs "THINK SNOW" make some people want to think summer. Others are thinking about their winter heating bills. Some are thinking about chopping down a tree and working it up into firewood. Rick Lane isn't too sure about those Cub trades. Junior Freund isn't mour ning the loss of Bruce Sutter. For my part, I'm not mourning about any of them, but think trades will do them some good. They were in the basement with those great stars, they can't do worse. There is no sub-basement in the league. Sometimes when I think I was born 30 years too soon, the thought occurs --What do some of those great ball players of yesteryear think when they read about Dave Winfield (age 29) being signed by the Yankees to a $8 - 10 million package? Coach Ludwig's McHenry Warriors won a 61-55 overtime game from the Woodstock Blue Streaks here Tuesday night. Since Dick Rabbitt made a point of the Warriors win ning two games when I was absent, he had me on trial. If the Warriors had lost this one, there is no telling what might have happened. The home team showed stamina and alertness, forcing many turnovers. With the spirit shown in this game, the Warriors may make some of the highly rated teams sit up and take notice. The 6*8" junior, a 1978 graduate of McHenry High School, had an active hand in the 3-3 record compiled by MacMurray through early december. In the first six games, Mayer has 12 of 28 from the field and added four free throws for a total of 28 points. He also has pulled down 21 rebounds. "Mark has good size and experience »• th#» nost position." coach Bob Gay said in reference to Mayer's credentials for the starting assignment. "He's also a good leaper and has a nice touch with his shot." Mayer played a portion of last season at Shawnee Junior College near Ullin in southern Ulineis before transferring in early I960 to MacMurray. At 200 pounds, he ranks as the most physically imposing member of the squad. Mayer, a physical education major at Mac- Murray, is the son of Mr and Mrs. George Mayer of McHenry Mark Mayer Crystal Lake Size Problem Coach Ken Ludwig will take his Warriors to Crystal Lake tonight to face the Central Tigers in a Fox Valley encounter.
