PAGE 20-PLAINDEALER- TUESDAY, DECEMBER 23, 1980 The Special Tree & It was a real outdoor adventure for the students of Nazarene Nursery school in Mundelein last week as they visited the William Howenstine farm near McHenry to cut their own Christmas tree. After boarding a hay rack, Alice Howenstine drove the tractor, giving the youngsters a first hand view of open fields dotted with Christmas trees of all ages. In lower left photo, the oungsters select the tree for their classroom and sing carols as the tree is cut. Two of them (center photo) assist in getting the tree to the hay rack. Just a stump remains as the kids begin their Journey back to the farm house for hot chocolate. Once they return to the school, they will enjoy another treat as they decorate their special tree for the holidays. kriuih' P.O. KNUTH CO. INC. THE GREAT OUTDOORS (Continued from page 1) ; Howenstines open their farm to students from the area. J Throughout the year, classes ! arrange for farm field trips to ; their farm. On these trips, the i students also visit the neigh boring dairy farm belonging to Larry Stilling. There are also groups, par ticularly the Girl Scouts ana the Campfire Girls, that come to spend a weekend with the Howenstines -- specializing in pioneer crafts and back-to-basics cooking. In these sessions the students may learn to grind wheat into flour, dip candles and study their importance to the pioneer life, make rope and learn a different form of cooking. Mrs. Howenstine also in troduces the students of these classes to recycling, a pet project of the Howenstines. "We do it because we enjoy it," she said of all of the programs offered.
