Tennille Show «3D<8>0 News ESPN College Basket- bell Show 8 Joe Frenklin Show Morecambe And Wiee sports file by Steve K. Wslz SPORTSWHIRLED--The New York Giants surprised everybody a few years ago when they tabbed unherald ed Phil Simms, a blond-haired Prince Valiant-type quarterback from unknown Morehead State U. in Ken tucky. Coach Ray Perkins obviously knew what he was doing since Simms has shown he has unlimited potential which could pay off in a big way next year. The Giants, riddled by injuries throughout most of the season, per formed admirably with a squad full of rookies, has beens, and free agents. Perkins, who will have the op portunity to draft a game breaking running back, is in an envious position. His rookies have gained valuable ex perience, while most of his veterans will return next year. With a good draft, who knows what miracle will occur in the Meadowlands next year. By the way, Perkins also has a talented back-up QB in Scott Brunner, from little known Delaware State U. as well... Speaking of unheard of colleges who produce top-flight pros, it will be interesting to see how the first couple of rounds in the NFL draft will develop. Purdue's Mark Herrmann slacked off considerably during the last few months, while Nicky Hall of Tulane, Ed McMichael of Rubers and Neil Lomax of Portland State received rave reviews. Lomax is considered the best of the unknown QB lot. As far as tailbacks are concerned, who knows it the Citadel's Stump Mitchell will be given serious considera tion. At only five foot nine inches the pros might shy away from the stellar collegiate back. Other backs to look out for are Yale's Rich Diana, James Brooks of Auburn and Gerald WiDhite of San Jose State. As for unknown pass receivers, how about the whole receiving corps at Portland State. Somebody had to catch Neil Lomax's passes. SOCCER KICKS-- Big goings-on in the NASL in recent weeks. There are two new Canadian franchises--the Calgary Boomers and the Montreal Manic. I wonder if the Montrealers will use a slogan like--'You don't have to be crazy to watch the Montreal Manic' in their ticket pro motions. The New England Tea Men moved to Jackson ville, but retained their name and ownership. Tell me what does Jacksonville have to do with tea? Maybe orange juice, but not tea. Then»again, who ever heard of a Utah Jazz? ... In case ydb missed it, in your local sports gossip columns, Pefe got divorced in the Dominican Republic recently. Why the Dominican Republic you ask? According to Telam (an Argentine News Agency) the 40-year-old Brazilian superstar did not want the divorce proceedings to drag on. In the Dominican Republic divorces are granted in 24 hours. Pele cited his long stays away from home (which involv ed business transactions and promotional appearances) as part of the reason for his failed marriage.
