FRIDAY, DECEMBER 2t, ltM Tigers Claw McHenry The Warriors battled against a severe height disadvantage and dropped a 60 to 41 Fox Valley contest to the Crystal Lake Tigers Friday night at the fieldhouse. A second period letdown when they were outscored 17 to 6 also led to their downfall. The loss left the Warriors 2 and 2 in conference play, the same record as the Tigers. The Warriors and Tigers traded baskets until 2:30 of the initial period when Costigan's jumper put the Warriors ahead 10 to 9, but the Tigers grabbed the lead once again and led 15 to 14 at the end of the period. After Bob Greve's 20- footer put the Warriors ahead 18 to 17 at 6:15, disaster then struck the local crew. The Warriors went five minutes without scoring, whereby the Tigers ran off 13 unanswered points jumping to a 30 to 18 lead and held on to a 32 to 20 margin at the intermission. The third period was all Bob Zeller. The senior forward of the Warriors outscored the entire Tiger team 10 to-6, as he hit for five baskets and all the Warrior points for the period and the Warriors trailed 38 to 30. The Warriors forced into playing the Tiger game could not get untracked in the final quarter and were outscored 22 to 11. Zeller led the local sin scoring with 14, and Greve picked up 10 still enough to keep him in first place in the conference scoring race. Again it was a case of too much height that the Warriors had to overcome. The Tigers got numerous layups underneath and fored the Warriors from their run and gun game into a more deliberate style of play. As coach Ken Ludwig said after the game, "We couldn't cope with them on the boards, and that was the ball game". Len Jensen At Carroll On The Sideline With Dick Rabbitt The Warriors didn't look too good the other night in the fieldhouse at Crystal Lake. In my nineteen years of watching Warrior basketball, I have yet to see them play what I would call a good game in the spacious arena at Crystal Lake. True, we have won our share of games over the past years, but somehow we never have played a decent game. I am convinced that it is a jinx for the Warriors. When they announce the starting lineups in the Fox Valley it seems as if it is the giants against the midgets. That is what the Warriors are facing this season. It is nothing for one of the teams to start at least a six fo * "»x inch giant, and a couple of six foot four inch players, Ken Ludwig sends out six two and under. Maybe what McHenry needs is to pipe in some of thai Lake Michigan water, and our youngsters drink some of it and crow. It would be nice if one of these seasons Ken Ludwig had a tall one to rely upon, or maybe go out and recruit one like other schools do during the summer months. The Warriors will be at Wheeling tonight to play the host school in their holiday tournament. Game time is 7:45 p.m. To get to Wheeling High School take Rt. 120 to Rt. 60. Take Rt. 60 until you reach Rt. 83. Turn South and stay on 83 until you come to the high school. Congratulations to Vic Betancourt on his winning the 155 lb. championship at the Harvard wrestling tournament last Saturday. This meet is one of the toughest in this part of the state, and the young Warrior did an outstanding job. Pat Wirtz will take his girls' basketball team to North Chicago over the holidays for a tournament. Last year the Warriors finished third, and hope to do better this year. Getting back to the fieldhouse last Friday, I had to folic over a bet that I lost to an old friend Wilbur Hecht. I am still ahead of genial Wilbur on our Warrior Crystal Lake bets very year, but when the outcome was no longer in doubt, he came my way with his hand out. Just wait till we get the Tiger here later in the season. Going back to the 1958-59 season, the year the Warriors won the North Suburban championship under Cliff Fulton. The Warriors won their sixth straight conference victory over a 64 to 57 win over Dundee. Later in the season they were up6et by the ZeeBees of Zion, but held on to win the only conference championship in the history of McHenry High School. McHenry Vs.
