They bowed to the host school, but came back to defeat Maine North in the consolation round. They will get the opportunity to play a Chicago Public school team in Clemente on Monday afternoon. Having seen Clemente play, the Warriors will have to play a good game to come out ahead as the Clemente team is quick and can jump with the best of them. Should be an interesting matchup. Maybe one of these days Bill Blankenhorn will get his wish and host a tourney here at Buckner Gym. He tried this year but was not successful as Johnsburg and Marian Central had other committments. To have a successful tourney, you need area schools to participate in order to have a good gate. Elgin has returned to an eight team affair, and with Elgin, Elgin Academy, and Dundee all entered , should have success at the gate. I thought that in the past two years thef^was poor planning at Elgin. Having both St. Eds and Dundee play mid-afternoon games brought small crowds and led to the financial failure of the tourney. If those local teams play at night when people can come out and watch them, tney would have faired much better. I believe I am correct in saying that the McHenry fans saved Elgin from complete financial disaster teat year as the Warriors had a big following throughout the tournament. fe, With the new year upon us we would like to extend some wishes for our coaches at McHenry .High School. To Ken Ludwig...the big man he n!^s been looking for over the years. To Mike Shanahan...a pool full of swimmers. To Pat Wirtz...a successful girls basketball season. To Mary Sobczak.. . that his grapplers will be free from illness and injuries to give him the season he richly deserves To Jean Natoli...some excellent badminton players and to Dan Boland . some four minute milers and nine second sprinters. ̂ Likewise to Don Seaton's girls. some .400 hitters to Brian Wilson, the new baseball coach and that Gary Gray may have some future Davis Cuppers in his fold. To Cis Momer.to reach that final goal of going to state in field hockey. To Chuck Cuda...continued success with his golfers and a return to Springfield next fall. To Pam Schaffer...some six footers for her volleyball team, and to Joe Schlender, ...some heavyweights for his line next fall, along with a crushing fullback. And to all you Warrior fans wherever you may be...a Happy New Year. Going back to the 1967-68 season when the Warriors were the doormat for the North Suburban. They were 0-14 in conference play, but had a chance against the ZeeBees in losing an overtime thriller, 61-57 at East Campus. A Warrior shot in the last second went around the hoop and dropped out, sending the game into overtime, where the Zee Bees outscored the local crew 6-3 for the win. In Woodstock, Marian Central started out the season in lopsided wins in the Marian Thanksgiving tournament and started people thinking. Coach Hans Rokus was utilizing almost everyone in his lineup, as Carl Brown, Don Roughan, Scott Truckenbrod, Brad Gregory and Mike Sabatka all took turns leading the Marian scorers in the first six games. After a car accident sidelined Carl Brown and Scott Truckenbrod at least through the Christmas tourney, Marian fortunes have started to fall as their record dropped from 5-0 to 5-3 in one week. The worst part about the three losses is that they all came at the hands of West Suburban Catholic Conference foes. Hopefully Brown and Truckenbrod will be back starting Jan. 9, when Marian will face Driscoll, St. Edwards and St. Francis in one week. Mid-Season Blues Hit Area Teams Although each of those teams fill the three bottom spots in the conference at present, Marian could have a tough time with them without Brown and Truckenbrod. A loss to two of them would all but eliminate Marian from competing for the conference crown. If, however, Marian can stay in the thick of things for awhile, they will end the season against the same three cellar teams and could hope for an outside chance at the crown. Benet and Marmion, both at 4-0 in the conference, both beat Marian in the past week and should fight it out all the way for the conference title. In McHenry, it was thought to be a rebuilding year as almost every Fox Valley competitor has a height advantage on the Warriors. McHenry had different ideas though, boasting two of the top five conference scorers and struggling to a 2-2 conference mark and 5-3 overall mark. Bob Greve has taken over as the scoring leader, averaging 21 points in four conference matches. Bob Zeller is fifth in conference scoring 68 points in four encounters for a 17 point per game average. Overall, McHenry has given up 60 points per game to opponents and has averaged only 57.9 on offense, but they McHenry Splits Tourney Games From Your Friends at John's Sport Stop... Best Wishes For A Happy and Prosperous New Year!" Third Joel Wakitsch The Holiday tournaments are all underway with McHenry travelling to Wheeling where Wheaton North has to be picked as the favorite. Both Johnsburg and Marian Central invade Hampshire in a welcome break from conference competition. Overall, Johnsburg seems to be doing the best of the area teams, holding fourth place in the Shark Conference with a 2-2 mark and doing very well in non-conference battles with a 5-1 record. 'Hie Skyhawks are supporting an offensive attack of 64.4 points per game with a solid defense that is giving Up only 58.3 points per game. ^ A mix of good outside shooting from Rick Neiss and Tom Pieper and the garbage collecting of Chuck Novy underneath has proved to be a very effective offense. A running team, Johnsburg has only had trouble with opponents who slow them down and make them set up Marengo did an effective iob at this and cam$ away with a decisive 62-52 win behind the strong rebounding and shooting of their 6' 3" center Kerry Garman. For Johnsburg to make a strong showing in the Shark Conference, Frank Jakubicek at 6'3" and 210 will have to become more of an offensive threat for the Skyhawks. His rebounding has been adequate, but his 5-6 points per game have left the opposition worrying only about the outside shooting. Hopefully, Jakubicek will be left all alone and can make good on those short five-footers in games to come. Russ Beck at 5*7" is not a big scoring threat, but his ball handling and precision passing has kept him in the lineup to feed Neiss and Pieper. have won the close games and kept a respectable record going into the rest of the season. After the Christmas Tounament in Wheeling, McHenry will host conference-leading Crown on Jan. 9., plus an away game against Dundee, who currently sits in a tie with Jacobs for the second spot in the conference. All the area teams started out the season with surprising starts, and have had mid-season trouble, but in any sport, the end of the season tells it all. As I see it, McHenry can not keep in the thick of things with no height. They have outrebounded only one team this year and Greve and Zeller cannot carry the team all year long. I see a surprising fif ih place finish for the locals, despite the lack of size. ' Johnsburg has much the same problem as McHenry. If Neiss and Pieper have off days, they won't wi. Wirg will most likely end up about where they are now, at .5u .. .. a fourth place finish. Jakubicek will have to make a move for the Skynawks to move any higher in the standings. As tor Marian, your guess is as good as mine. Their top scorers and rebounder is sidelined, but they have managed to stay in most of the recent game against conference contenders. I'll guess at a late season Wge to fourth'place in the WSCC The wheeling Wildcats played poor hosts as they defeated the Warriors 70-56 in the opening round of the Wheeling tournament on Friday night. Again, it was a case of the Warriors giving away too much height, as the Wildcats out rebounded the Warriors 34-21 in a game that was not as close as the final score. The Warriors were in foul trouble almost from the opening whistle, as the dynamic duo of Greve and Zeller each had three fouls in the opening period. The wildcats made 12 of 25 from the line, while thw Warriors made 6 of 9 attempts and were in the bonus only in the closing minutes of the game. The Warriors never led in the game and at only 6:30 of the opening period when Bob Zeller's layup tied the game at two. From then it was all downhill as the host school climbed out to a 18-10 first period margin with the last McHenry basket coming at the 3:00 mark of the period. The Warriors then hit a dry spell as the host Wildcats ran off 16 unanswered points and holding the Warriors scoreless tor nearly six minutes before Bob Zeller canned a 10-footer. Wheeling increased their margin to a comfortable 15 points at the intermission, 38-23. In the third period the Warriors tried gamely, but to no avail as they taller, talented crew from Wheeling grabbed a 21 point spread and led 56-35 going into the final period. The last quarter was a see saw affair, until the Wheeling coach went to the bench and the Warriors made a rush, falling short in o the 70-56 defeat. ' It looked as if the Warriors were thinking of the turkey and the trimmings as they could not capitalize on the 24 Wildcat turnovers and committing only 15 miscues themselves. To say the least, it was not one of the local crews' better performances this year. Bob Greve fouled out with 5:30 remaining, and shortly thereafter, Bob Zeller went to they pines with five fouls. Zeller (fid, however, lead the Warriors in scoring with 18, while Greve had 14 and John Costigan made 10. Bob Zeller added two quick baskets and gave the Warriors the margin they needed as the locals played steady ball the rest of the way for the win.
