-o . On The Sideline > WittL Djck Rabbitt Well after a Ions layoff due to vacations, the Wan athletic teams will get back into action this weekend. Warriors the festivities with the swimmers, and girls basketball team both hosting Woodstock at West campus. The "Rassling Warriors" travelled to Wauconda, and then travel to Crown tonight for a Fox Valley encounter. Tomorrow Mike Shanatian will take his freshmen swimmers to Libertyville for the Libertyville Invitational. Pat Wiriz's girls basketball team will be at Dundee for a 1:30 p.m. game, and of course Ken Ludwigs' Warriors will play host to Crown tonight and Fremd of Palatine tomorrow night. The Annual J.V. Werstling tourney will be held at West campus tomorrow starting at 9 a.m. Eight schools will be participating, and it is a good chance for you fans to watch some good nigh school wrestling. ^HadTnlcedlanJBIformSvfa^ an assistant basketball coach at Deerfield. The Indians were in the tough Ppntiac Holiday tourney, and when I asked Paul about the top rated team in the country, Quincy, he gave me an earful. Paul, who should know his basketball being a former M.V.P. at the University of Wisconsin stated that the Quincy team is awesome. Their front line is tflO", 6'6", and 6'4" and they pass aU over the floor. He stated that they have a 6'9'f reserve, who came in and played about five minutes, scoring 10 points and picking up 4 rebounds. Paul went on to say that Providence high school the top rated Class A school in the state, has probably the number one player in the state in 6'8" center Walt Downing, who has been an All-Stater the past three years. What Ken Ludwig wouldn't do with just one of those tall players this season.. The Warriors have been assigned a Regional tournament for the first week in March. It will probably be the Warriors, Woodstock, Belvidere and Hononegah of Kockton in the tourney. The Warriors should be seeded first, with their wins over Woodstock and Belvidere earlier this season. The school formerly Tuley high school, for you old time Chicago people, was renamed in honor of the former Pittsburg Pirate outfielder several years ago. It consists of white, Hispanic and black students. In the/game I saw them play, I was impressed by their sportsmanship and fair {day. The enrollment is about 4,100 students, by far the largest in the Wheeling tourney, but don't think they can compete with Phillips, Manley and the rest of the public league powerhouses. week. In fact only last season, as we bring you the shoot out at West campus last year] We have talked about it this We are only going a short way back to memory lane this fact only 1 mpu: week, but thought you would like to look at the boxscores once again, as the Warriors were defeated 80 to 79 in a whale of a ball game. With Crown here tonight, it would be nice if the Warriors turned the tables and send the Vikings home with their first conference defeat. • Remember in this game the first 12 shots taken all were baskets and it looked as if the score would go into triple figures, but both teams cooled down a bit and the local crew lost a five point lead in the final period to go down to defeat. Now, hear this! A1 and Laura Phannenstill let me use some old papers that have a juicy story about the Volo "Rail Party" in July, 1913. It seems some of the women took a dislike for a good looking woman who assisted her crippled husband operate a country store. Further, this .woman didn't fancy a saloon moving next door. That was a side issue. One group of Volo women heard and spread rumors about the good looking gal and her brother-in-law. A little hanky-panky was suspected. The Chicago American showed pictures and ran a long story about those Volo women, 8 strong, riding the accused gal out of town on a rail and dumping her in a mud puddle. They gave her 24 hours to get out of town. She did just that. Ttoen came a blast from a little magazine called JIM JAM JEMS Wow! The writer pointed out the goodness of the accused woman in caring for her crippled husband for 10 years. The writer also tore the actions of those 8 women apart in great style, men tioning "Let him who is without sin cast the first stone" and "Judge not, lest ye be judged". That "Rail Party" was talked about for many years. There was a threat of a lawsuit, but I have no recollection of such action. Back in 1913 rails were used for more things than building fences. Another good friend, Bernie Matchen, brought me an issue of the "AMERICAN LEGION MAGAZINE" with a feature story by Lawrence Welk titled "Morality Is Not A Fad". Lawrence did himself proud as he told of growing up on a farm near Strasburg, North Dakota. Good, solid parents taught their children right from wrong, and they taught them how to work. That Legion magazine is a good one. I plan to read it from cover to cover. FOOltAU * * * * ) Hy Pete Frttchie WASHINGTON, D. C. -- Although some changes have been made in college and pro football rules, others should be worked out carefully, to lessen serious injury while retaining the essence of the game. One rule which might be helpful is one which would better protect pass and punt receivers. As the rule now stands, the second after the receiver has the ball he can be smashed into by a flying tackier. v a Currently, the game is played so that huge defen sive players time their "hit" to almost the split second the receiver catches the ball. Too many pass receivers art seriously injured today less than a second after they grasp the ball-either in the air or on the ground. In fact, this intimidation has become part of the game. Joking TV commentators re fer to hearing those foot steps, or paying the price when a receiver is concen trating on making a catch. A better rule might be that the receiver must be allowed to take one step before he can be tackled. The defenders-on pass plays-could still go for the ball. But if the receiver caught it, he could not be sledgehammered from the blind side before he had a chance to take a step, or get set to protect himself. Already the rules have been altered to help protect quar terbacks. The same consid eration is due punt and pass receivers. There may be other rule alterations, especially for linemen in the trenches, which would help lessen serious injury, which are desirable. Football is still a long way from being the sporting contest it should be. Exciting, yes, but overly brutal and violent. ONE MINUTE SPORTS QUIZ 1. Who was named NASCAR Driver of the Year? 2. Super Bowt Super Stars Former Green Bay quar terback Bart Starr has the best completion re cord in Super Bowl his tory, completing 69.6 peroent of his passes in Super Bowl I. The Packers beat Kansas City 35-10. Minnesota the following two years. Football Intimidation William Furlong (New^ork T imes ) recently examined the violence in American football. He found that, especially in pro football but not only in the pro game, hitting, kicking, gouging were still very much the heart of the game-despite new NFL rules which were designed to curb violence. The question posed was why we Americans permit this to be the centerpoint of a national sport. Is there something good which comes out of the excessive violence in football? Furlong cites the case of Jim Otto, a former center for t% Oakland Raiders. During his playing days Otto suffered ten broken noses, a broken jaw, a dislocated knee, many dislocated fingers, a severely pinched back nerve, bone chips in elbows, three left knee operations, six operations on his right knee and many concussions. The deliberate injury or harming of opposing players is, in effect, intimidation, and this shouldn't be the major part of a sport-though some injuries are inevitable in most sports. ^ But in football, critics poinf out, intimidation 4s the name of the game. Players go out on the field to fight it out, as in war, and physical and serious injury often result. Furlong, of course, is right. American football is excessively violent and brutal. Any sport in which players have to get psyched up to hate and to be brutal, is lacking the true sporting spirit. This, however, makes money for owners, promoters and television networks. It also drives some players to drugs. d In 1889, Walter Camp, o n e o f t h e f a t h e r s o f m o d e r n A m e r i c a n f o o t b a l l , c r e a t e d a n A l l - A m e r i c a t e a m .
