PAGE* - PLAINDEALER FRIDAY , JAM' 16,1981 On The Sideline Ral̂ bitt With Dick Crown showed why they are the cream of the crop in the Fox Valley in last Friday's victory over the Warriors. They have height, speed and shooting ability. The Warriors were hanging in there, until that "slam dunk" took them right out of the ball game. From that time on, it was just a matter of how hign the score would be. Coach Jim Hinkle of the Vikings showed a lot of class Friday night. With 12 minutes remaining in the game, he had already cleared the bench and gave his regulars the rest of the night off. Only in a rare instance these days do you see a coach try and pour it on a hapless rival. The coaching fraternity is a pretty close knit group, and coaches understand that tney may be in the same boat sometime, and you gain nothing by running up the score with your regulars still in the game. So in this frigid weather we would like to give our bouquet of the week to Goach Jim Hinkle of the Crown Vikings. However, that Friday night loss didn't stop the Warrior from coming back and beating Fremd on Saturday night. Bob Zeller and Bob Greve combined for 45 points to knock off the Mid-Suburban North team, 70-61. Tonight the Warriors are at Dundee for a Fox Valley game. The Cards are defending champs, but were hit hard by graduation, and you can't count them out. Coach Paul Judson gets the best out of his material. If the Warriors can get some scoring help to go along with Greve and Zeller they can make it mighty interesting for a lot of teams. Pat Wirtz's girls team split a pair of conference games last week. His girls are running into the same trouble as Ken Ludwig's Warriors. They have to give away a lot of height, and he also has some underclassmen on his squad. Most of the girls teams this year are senior dominated, and that makes a difference. Marty Sobczak's "Rassling Warriors" are coming along in great shape. Took third in their J.V. Invitational last Saturday, ana defeated Crown on Friday night for a big boost for the squad. Tomorrow Mike Shanahan will take his swimmers to Rockford for the Jefferson Invitational, and Tuesday will host Zion Benton. Going back to the 1974-75 season when the Warriors played Dundee in what was to become a historic evening. Coach Ken Ludwig was out to reach the century mark in victories at McHenry. The opponent was Dundee. The Warriors were blazing hot the first half, outscoring the visiting Cards 54 to 29. With his regulars on the bench, the reserves were determined to get the magic number, and Joe Knaack with less than a minute remaining sunk the free throw for the 100th point in Ken Ludwig's 100 victory at McHenry. Randy Blankenhorn's charity toss made it 101, and the cake was wheeled out of the locker room, and it was gone in seconds by the huge crowd on the floor. K. Ludwig Christy Kasprzyk Koerber Reilly T. In the finals, Richmond's win was never in doubt. Tom Otto, big number 44 for Richmond, tallied 19 points in the final game as the Rams took a massive 41-7 lead into halftime. Otto scored all 19 points in the first half and sat out the second half with the comfortable margin. Johnsburg came back slightly in the second half by outscoring Richmond 13-11. Ron Beck for the Wildcats could only muster 7 points to lead Johnsburg, while Kieth Maxwell put in 10 to go along with Otto s 19 for Richmond Richmond advanced to the finals in convincing fashion by beating the Montini Mustangs, 56-44 as Otto led the Rams with 20. For Montini, who took third in t h e t o u r n a m e n t , S c o t t Freund had a good tourney in hitting 15, 15 and 19 points in the three games. Johnsburg got to the finals in controversial fashion, as they had no trouble with McHenry Junior High in the opening game of the tourney, 43-22, but barely edged St. John's of Johnsburg, 31-26 in a game marred by furious tempers. Bob Nowak led Johnsburg in the close victory with 13 points.
