PAGE 6 • PLAINDE ALER - WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 21.1161 Johnsburg Takes Second In Girls' Tournament MASKED MARVEL-Sue Dehn (44) of Johnsburg looks like a defensive hockey goalie while wearing a mask to protect her broken nose, but Dehn was anything but defensive in the Johnsburg Girls' Basketball Tournament as she scored 18 points against Grayslake to lead her team to a 47-41 victory. She also set a record for most free throws made in a tournament game (7 of 12) and scored six points in the closing minutes of the tourney's final game against Wauconda. The Bulldogs of Wauconda beat Johnsburg to gain the title, 43-40, despite the effort of Dehn, who had no trouble rebounding, splitting the seam or shooting as shown above. STAFF PHOTO-JOEL WAKITSCH Despite three quick buckets in the last three minutes by the masked wonder, Sue Dehn, the Johnsburg Skyhawks fell to the big Wauconda Bulldogs, 43-40 in the final game of the of the Johnsburg Girl Basketball Tournament last Saturday. Dehn, a junior who was banned from play in a earlier game because she was wearing a hockey mask to protect her broken nose, got the O.K. to perform in the tournament. Playing the point position in the final game, Dehn was rather ineffective until Johnsburg coach Dan Stanowski moved her to the post position with 3:50 left in the game. Dehn proceeded to score 6 of her total eight points in the last minutes, but it wasn't enough as Wauconda pulled it out in the last 30 seconds of play. Inge Dschida was high scorer for the local in the final game, hitting 12 points overall and the opening points of the game in the seesaw contest. Johnsburg led by 4 points throughout the first period until Kris Hubbard of Wauconda hit a long one at the buzzer to knot the score 14-14 at the end of one period. The second period saw little scoring by either team and the half ended with Johnsburg holding on to a slight 20-19 lead. The third period saw Cheri Kofler hit the opening bucket, but Barb Pellant put Wauconda ahead for the first time, 25-22 with a three-point play mid-way in the quarter. Down by three, the Skyhawks had a golden opportunity to go ahead, but Johnsburg missed three of four free throws and Wauconda pulled ahead 33-27 at the 2:50 mark of the quarter. Barb Pellant put in a 15-footer to give the Bulldogs a nine point lead and after Kim Grenman put in one of two free throws, the quarter ended with the Warrior Tankers Win Two. Lose One Last week Mike Shanahan's swimmers defeated Streamwood by the score of 102 to 69 and Dundee 99 to 53, while losing to powerful Waukegan West 121 to 99. Thursday night they lost to co-leader in the Fox Valley, Crystal Lake Central by the score of 68-33, and on Saturday they lost to Northwest Conference power Antioch 55-27. There is no doubt that the local girls played two of the better teams in the area, and the underclass squad of Pat Wirtz were simply out- manned in the two games. Like their counterpart the boys team, they give away a lot of height, and have to make up for it on hustle and desire, but that doesn't always win ball games. This vrtfek seems no better as they take on the other co- leaders in the conference, Crown on Thursday. Next Saturday they host Cary Grove at 1:30 p.m.. Greve Hits 22 McHenry Wins Trailing 28 to 18 at intermission, the M^Henrv Warriors broke loose with 35 second half points to nip the Dundee Cardunals 53 to 50 at Dundee Friday night. It was an uphill battle all the way and it was Joh ~"'s 15-footer with 4:12 remaining in the game that g*.<- ,..v Warriors the lead they had sought since the first minute of the game. It was a game that you had to see to believe . Sixty-three turnovers, (thirty-three by the hosts), and at one time early in the game, there were more turnovers than points on the scoreboard. The officiating was something to be desired. It was bad for both teams. "fiie Cards went to the foul line 12 times in the first half, the Warriors not one time. In the second half the Warriors marched to the line 28 times, the Cards just 5. Coach Paul Judson in the final minute was so livid that he stalked on the floor and held up the game about three minutes. Result, no technical foul, and he admitted after the game that he deserved not one, but two for his conduct Anyway, it was a nice win for the Warrios, who had to overcome the flu bug during the week, and as Coach Ludwig commented after the game, "It was indeed a team victory . The game started out as if it were Dundee versus Bob Greve. The young Warrior scored all the points in the opening period as the Warrior trailed 16-8. The Cards increased their lead, then bob Byrniarski and John Costigan hit the hoop for the Warriors, but the Cards did manage to maintain their 10 point margin at the intermission 28 to 18. Playing with the effects of the flu bug that had him bedridden all week, Bob Zeller got into the the act early in the third period with two quick baskets that put a spark in the Warriors. With a pressing defense, the Warriors forced the Cards into numerous turnovers and began to peck away at the Card lead. At the 4:00 mark, the Warriors still trailed by 10, but Burgdorf and Costigan hit the hoop. Greve then hit one from the corner, and Costigan's two free throws along with Dave Smith's bucket from underneath put the Warriors closer, 42- 38. Bob Greve's two free throws lot the Warriors down 42 to 40 at the buzzer. In the early going of the final period, both teams made turnovers, and finally Bob Greve's three point play put the Warriors down by one, 44-43. ' „ /• At 4:12 John Costigan hit a 15-footer to give the Warriors the lead. Seconds later Dave Smith's two charity tosses put the Warriors up by three, 47-44. With 2:30 remaining, the Warriors had increased their lead to six, 50-44, but the Cards came roaring back and closed the gap 50-48. On a Card inbound pass, Costigan picked it off and was fouled intentionally. The young senior calmly made both tosses, and Bob Greve's free throw closed the scoring for the night. Bob Greve led the Warriors with 22 points, and he still is the Fox Valley's leading scorer with 128 points. Costigan chipped in with 13. Friday the Warriors host Gary Collins Crystal Lake South "Gators" and on Saturday they travel to Zion to take on the ZeeBees in a non-conference game.
