iE S - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY. JANUARY 23,1M1 Collins' Gators To Invade McHeniy The McHenry High Warriors will host Gary OotHns' Crystal Lake South Gators tonight and then travel to Zion for a big doubleheader weekend of basketball The Gators are in second place in the Fox Valley, two games behind league leader Crawn, and only one game ahead of the Warriors and three other teams. Collins' crew had high hopes of giving the Vikings a run for the roses, but in two contests have dropped both by 10 points each. However, they meet once again later in the season. The Gators are led by 6'6" Randy Salerno who is a good scorer and an excellent rebounder. Curt Walor at 6'2" gives help on the board and scores in double figures. Rounding out the first five are three more six-footers or better, Jim Goodwin, Steve Murphy and Ron Wise. Again the Warriors will be giving away a lot of height, and with Collins, a former sophomore coach undo- Ken Ludwig, it won't take much for the veteran coach to have the Warriors ready for the game. The Warriors with the flu bug gone, and a winner last week over Dundee are hoping to move up in the standings in the Fox Valley. No doubt the Gators will bring a large following, so it looks like a big time tonight at West campus. Tipoff is at 8 p.m. with the sophomores getting under way at 6:30. AT ZION Tomorrow night the Warriors travel to Zion to take on Phil Judson's ZeeBees. The Zeebees are in a rebuilding year, using a lot of underclassmen, and it shows in their record of only l win and 12 defeats on the season. However, they are always tough at home, as the Warriors in the past have found out. We owe thenf a couple, so tomorrow night would be a good time to notch another win at Zion. The senior letter man will also lead his team against North Boone on Friday and tough Marengo in conference battles on Saturday. Both are away games. The Nationals will take place on June 5 and 7 in Tempe, Arizona. Joel Wakitsch Sophs Lose To Cards A last minute rally failed for the sophomores of Bill Blankenhom Friday night, and the Dundee Cards held on to win a thriller 58 to 57. Early in the second period, the young Cards overcame a Warrior lead and at one time stretched it to 9 points, before the Warriors moved on the attack However, the Warriors could not grab the lead, although they had several chances in the final period A costly tunover. and foul gave the Cards the opportunity to emerge the victors. Bill Hermann with 20 points and Mike Bauml with 19 led the Warrior scoring. Jim "Whitey" Hall, 1977 graduate of McHenry High School and holder of four i n d i v i d u a l s w i m m i n g records at McHenry, has qualified for the NCAA II N a t i o n a l S w i m m i n g Championships in two events this past weekend at the Illinois Intercollegiate in Champaign. Hall won both the 500 and 1650 freestyles in 4:42 and 16:31 respectively, to pace Eastern Illinois University to nine first places out of 16 events in Champaign. Hall also swam a leg of the winning 800 free relay which qualified for the nationals in a time of 7:07.9. • Both of Hall's times were personal bests for the junior, two-year letterman. While at McHenry. Hall set records in the 200-freestyle (1:49.6), 50- freestyle(22.5), 100-freestyle (50.2) and the 500-freestyle (4:59.8). He also was part of a medley relay team that also set a Warrior record at 1:46.5. The former Warrior standout will travel to Youngstown State in Youngstown, Ohio on March 19-21 for the NCAA II finals. You would have had to be there to believe what went on during the game. Turnovers a plenty, and then some. Mike Boland and Chad Mihevc who were keeping track for me, almost gave up when the count reached twenty some or more. They finally wound up with 63 all toll for both games. It looked as if both teams woe trying to give each other the game. Something you rarely , see, Bob Bvrniarski took a rebound at the free throw line, dribbled down court, stopped, couldn't find a Warrior open, then proceeded to dribble again, no call from the official, and fans from both sides were on their feet yelling at the officials for that boo boo. Dan Boland had a lot of faith in the Warriors. When they were trailing by 12 in the third period, he said to me "We will win this one, believe me". I was wondering what he was looking at through the camera while taking pictures of the game. At that time the Warriors didn't look as if they would score again, but his faith held out and the Warriors did indeed win a thriller 53 to 50. Gary Collins brings his Gators to Buckner gym tonight. They are in second place in the Fox Valley, and the Warriors would like nothing better than to send Gary back toC.L. with another defeat. It should be a good game, and a good crowd is expected tonight. The ZeeBees of Zion are really in a down year. Only one win against twelve losses. That is something new for the crew of Phil Judson. How times have changed. Remember when Zion and the Warriors were always in the thick of things in the North Suburban, and it was a matter of fact who ever won their big game, generally would end up the Champ. The I.H.S.A. has assigned the winner of the McHenry regional to the Freeport sectional. For the first time in history Rock Valley college will not be the site of the sectional. Maybe parking is better in Freeport, so that one will not need a shuttle bus to get to the gym from your car. Pat Wirtz's girls team is still having trouble The inexperienced small squad has to give away a lot of height and experience, but one of these days they may be in the driver's seat. They play here tomorrow afternoon at West campus against Cary Grove at 1:30 p.m. They would appreciate your support. Down memory lane I see some familiar names on the Warrior team, as they beat Harvard in the semi-finals of the, McHenry County tournament at Woodstock in December of 1945. The Warriors jumped out to a big lead and were never headed in the game for a 46 to 23 victory. COUNTY TOURNEY DECEMBER, l»l5 Buss Brennan Goranson Althoff Neiss McHenry fg ft pf tp 0 0 1 0 Freunc W.
