Past 65 By Carl RiMet Jr. InterOcean Press Syndicate Q. -- "My 90-year-old mother broke a hip and has been confined in a medical rest home. She is quite feeble and rapidly becoming senile. Normally, she would qualify for financial assistance under Medicaid, but because we have been unable to document her birth in Trenton, N.J. on Aug. 3,1890, she does not qualify. The charges at the rest home of $1,100 a month are paid by my sister and myself My sister is 66, a retired school teacher, living on a fixed income near my mother in Florida. Her husband has cancer. I live ih California, 1 am nearly 65 and will retire this year I have a wife and a mentally retarded son. "At the rate of $1,100 a month the savings of my sister and myself are rapidly being depleted. Our financial outlook is bleak, unless the red tape in our attempt to confirm our mother's place of birth can be cut. This is quite ironic, as thehistory of our family in this country goes back to colonial times. "The Trenton authorities have advised us that if we can provide information on our mother's place of residence on either Jan. 1, 1900 or Jan 1, 1905, they might be able to help us. Such information is now unretrievable in the mind of our aged mother Her friends and relatives are all deceased. Can you help us?" -- Leslie R.Y., Sr A. -- Leslie doesn't explain why there is no documentation of birth H o w e v e r , t h e r e a r e a n y number of places he can write or telephone for in formation in an attempt to locate the mother's place of residence in 1900 or 1905. This is how an investigative newspaper reporter would begin the search: The Trenton Public Library, for 'example, (phone 609-327- 7188) has every city direc tory for Trenton dating back to 1890. The library will be pleased to check for listing of Leslie's mother as a child in Trenton. He can telephone or write the head librarian. He can also check into local property and tax records for the years mentioned. The gas com pany may still have records. Hospitals that were operating then may have records. The city water department probably has not retained records for 1900 and before, but Leslie can at least try a long shot by inquiring at no cost other than a cheap phone call. A call at 7:45 a.m. West Coast time will connect him in Trenton at 9 :45 a m eastern time. The Chamber of Com merce in Trenton can tell him which department stores were in business there in 1900. Perhaps his parents had accounts in one or more of them. Then, there is the U S Bureau of Census where he can ask for help in checking for the mother's existence in the census of 1900 He might hire a researcher in Trenton to scan the newspaper files for rv i i i i Km To Subscribe toThe McHenry Ptaimtealer The McHenry Ploindealer 3812 W. Leslie can place a classified advertisement in the two Trenton newspapers that could well get a response from another 90-year-old who knew his mother as a child. What is the history of his mother's parents"' Where were they married? How about marriage license records7 where was the mother of his mother reared? The father's home town7 If the father's em ployer in 1900 is still in business as a large cor poration. its files may go way back. Eighty and 90 years are too far back to expect that most records are not destroyed, but a con certed effort, a hard drive for information from all possible sources may bring results. Although it won't be easy Leslie should contact the Mercer County Office on Aging, (609 ) 989-6661 for expert advice on what else he can do. Q. - "I read the letter from Minor" T that said he longed for a rich chocolate cake for ^birthdays instead of a lot of useless presents I would love to bake him a cake -- just the kind he wants from an oldtime recipe -- with three layers, if he lives close enough so it won't spoil in transit when I send it". - Mrs Michael G H A. -- Minor has received many offers to bake him a chocolate cake I have forwarded the letters to him, including one that offered to bake a banana cake Q. -- "Minor T who wanted a chocolate cake and complained about the in- sensitivity of his offspring is perhaps a bit insensitive himself For instance, consider his listing of sons a n d d a u g h t e r s ' a n d 'husbands and wives' in his letter to you Males first! That shows he is accustomed to being catered to "If he has consistently received inappropriate gifts at Christmas and on other gift occasions, then he should have given broad hints to one of his daughters that he missed the chocolate cakes his wife and their mother had baked for him His failure to do so gives the impression that his is not a close knit' family, which is a circumstance that was in his hands from the beginning." - Nelda B (age76 and great- grandmother of three). A -- I don't think the u s a g e -- " s o n s a n d daughters" -- necessarily signifies that Minor T was used to being catered to And if he indeed was catered to. so what1 It's not a m i s d e m e a n o r L u c k y m a n ' I went to the bookshelves and took out some new and old history books, some novels and a few biographies to glance through and try to find for myself which usage is preferred - "Sons and daughters" or "Daughters and sons" In every mention I found it was invariably written with the male of the species first Such usage is FRIDAY, J ANUARY M.JM1 fixed in our language. It proves nothing except that it is a centuries-old thing. Perhaps Minor's family is not closely knit. If he thinks so. he no doubt regrets it. Most families today, un fortunately, are not as close as they were when Nelda was a child. Poor Minor! He rebelled at being smothered with gifts he couldn't use. He wanted a chocolate cake. He is scolded for it. Naughty Nelda! Q. -- "My husband is 80 and I am 76. We have no family and our friends are gone.
