JANUARY 28.1J|1 Reveal Exciting Sports Stories In '80 Review JANUARY The McHenry Warriors won their second game of the Elgin holiday tourney, by defeating St. Edward's o( Elgin by the score of 69 to 60. The Johnsburg Skyhawks romped past Burlington Central 89-61 and then n a r r o w l y d e f e a t e d Hampshire 40-37 in their first two games of the Northern Illinois Classic Tournament at Hampshire. Coacn Rex Hester's McHenry high freshmen won the Johnsburg freshmen tourney for the second year ina row. In the opening game the young Warriors defeated Round Lake by the score of 61 to 32. The next same found the Warriors on tine long end. of a 76 yo 36 win over Richmond-Burton. In the | finals the Warriors defeated' the host Skyhawks by the score of 62 to 48. The Johnsburg Skyhawks dropped their final two games of the 16-team Northern Illinois Classic tournament at Hampshire, and ended up in fourth place. The McHenry Warriors finished second in the Elgin Holiday tournament when they lo6t to Stevenson high school in the finals 71 to 64. They had overcome a 11 pt. halftime deficit to defeat Wheaton North to gain the finals. Brian Wrona, a McHenry junior, placed the highest of any Warrior wrestler at the sixteen team Rockford Boylan tournament. On his way to his second place medal in the 119 pound weight class, Wrona drew a bye, won a major decision over Funte of Morris, decisioned Carson of Moline and finally fell to Ed Slack of Woodstock in the championship match. In the recent North C h i c a g o H o l i d a y tournament, Coach Vern Petersen's McHenry high girls' team won the consolation championship. In the opening game the Warriors fell by the wayside to Stevenson by the score of 44 to 39. But from that time on it was all Warriors. The next game found the girls pitted against Round Lake with 4 Warriors in double figures, led by Sue Hutchinson's 18 pts., the Warriors won easily 71 to 38. In the consolation championship, the Warriors defeated Ricn East 53 to 51. At the fifth annual Junior V a r s i t y W r e s t l i n g tournament held at West campus, McHenry won the team trophy for the first time. Compiling 124V4 team points, the J.V. Warriors sneaked past second place Crown by 3tt points. J o h n s b u r g g i r l s ' basketball squad now hosts a 6-2 record and are undefeated in two Shark conference contests. The Skyhawks defeated Harvard 54-47 at the Hornets home nest. Lara Jacobs was the game's top scorer by collecting 17 points. Sue Dehn added 16 points while their captain Inge Dschida contributed 11. A 25-foot jump shot by Tom Popovich from the top of the key gave the sophomore Skyhawks a 48-47 triple overtime victory against the Woodstock Blue Streaks in the Skyhawk gym. - FEBRUARY The Johnsburg girls' varsity basketball sqaud improved its conference record to 4-1 with a romping 42-31 victory over the Hononegah Indians on the Johnsburg home court. The victory puts the girls in second place in the Shark Conference, a half game behind South Beloit. In a game that had all the ingredients of a state championship, the Crown Vikings defeated the Warriors 80 to 79. It was a game in which you could call it a "legalized shootout", as' both teams burned the nets throughout the evening. Coach Gary Gray's McHenry high girls' team lost a barnburner to Crystal Lake Central 73 to 72. The lead seesawed throughout the game, with no team ever leading by more than 4 points. Closing out their regular dual meet season on a high note, the McHenry varsity wrestlers (ricked up two team victories. They wrestled Belvidere on their home mat and gained a 30-27 non-conference win.
