APRIL In a prelude to the Pox Valley Conference Track championship, the McHenry High Warrior of Dan Boland finished third in the Crystal Lake invitation. With all Pox Valley schools competing except Cary Grove in the indoor event, the host Tigers won the meet defeating Woodstock in the final event to insure the victory. Coach Mike Shanahan's McHenry High Water Polo team opened its season with a 25 to 4 win over Lake Forest at West campus. Pour members of Coach Ken Ludwig's Warriors were honored at the annual McHenry county basketball banquet held at' West campus. Len Jensen, the 5'10" playmaker and leading scorer of the Warriors, was honored with a first team berth, while teammates Jim Johnson and Tony Sroka were picked for the second team. Barry Anderson senior forward, was selected as honorable mention. Coach Ken Ludwig was honored as the Class AA Coach of the Year. Coach Ken SwansonV McHenry high baseball team split a pair of games at McCracken field, defeating Elgin Larkin 7-4 and drop­ ping the nightcap to the Elgin high school 6 to 2. The Johnsburg Skyhawk baseball squad dropped its season opener 5-1 to Cary Grove at Johnsburg's Tigers field. Three Johnsburg track athletes took first place in their events in the Skyhawks' first home meet of the season, but the Johnsburg squad still finished third behind McHenry and Antioch. Rick Szumlas, Chris Dixon and Wayne Besserud all won firsts in their respective contests. Coach Gary Gray's tennis team defeated Grant by the score of 4 to 1. Coach Don Seaton's McHenry high girls track team split a pair of meets at Gary Grove. They lost to the hosts 72 to 56 and defeated Harvard 100 to 27. Gary Gray's tennis team remains undefeated in dual meets when they defeated Zion Benton by the score of 4 to 1. The McHenry high baseball team contest to Wauconda score of 3 to 1. Brian and Marty Nuss of McHenry helped the Eureka college men's track team LEADING THE WAY-during most of the McHenry basketball season was Len Jensen (10) who was selected as an all-conference performer in the Fox Valley along with teammate Jim Johnson. Jensen was also selected as Mr. Basketball at the annual banquet at West Campus as well as collecting all- tourney honors at Sycamore and Elgin and second team honors on the Elgin Courier News area team. The Johnsburg girls got their softball season started after seven cancellations. The lady Skyhawks defeated South Beloit 12-3. Coach Ken Swanson's baseball Warriors had five conference baseball games in the Pox Valley with a 2 won, 2 lost and a tie for Johnsburg's senior Bruce Preston cleared the pole vault bar at 10 feet to win a second place in that event at the six-school A1 Bohrer invitational track meet at Cary Grove. The McHenry high sophomores defeated Cary Grove 5 to 2, with Dave Smith the winning pitcher and lost to Crystal Lake Central %5 to 1. The young Warriors won a double header over Jacobs winning 8 to 4 and 6 to 5. Competing in the Elgin Board of Realtors 10 kilometer (6.2 mile) road race, Larry Huck's 61.25 minutes for the 10 kilo distance earned him a second place ribbon in the over 60 year age. Gary Collins, former McHenry high school coach, won an award in his division. The Johnsburg high school varsity tennis team defeated Grant high in a match at Fox Lake. The expected dual bet­ ween St. Charles and Naperville North for the McHenry Relays title never materialized as the Saints ran away from the op­ position to win the meet in easy fashion. The Illinois Area YMCA state swimming cham­ pionships held at SIU in Carbondale proved the Camp Duncan YMCA Dolphin swim team is a high ranked state caliber swim team. The Dolphin's boy's team finished 4th. The Dolphin's boys are Corey Dunteman, 8 yr. and under. Joey Sommer, 9-10 yr, and Erik Bengston, 11-12 yr. Eric also set a new state record in that event.
