Late November brought about two inexperienced local basketball teams. McHenry had only Bob Greve and Bob Zeller returning while Johnaburg also displayed only 2 let- termen in Rick Neiss and Frank Jakublcek. . Johnaburg beat Salem Central, 77-59 in the season opener <as Tom Pieper showed early leadership possibilities with 19 points. The Skyhawks then ended November by taking second in the Round Lake Thanksgiving tourney, the final game of the Round Robin affair. McHenry also finished second in the Sycamore tourney by lotflng the final game to Sterling, 69-51. It was the first time McHenry has ever finished that high in Sycamore. DECEMBER As December made its entrance, the local high school fall sports banquets took place. Johnsburg named Tom Pieper Most Valuable Golfer, Kathy Szumlas, Most Valuable in tennis, Scott Valentin, Moat Valuable in football, Inge Dschida, top spiker and Lydia Oakley and Jay Jackson took Most Valuable running honors. At McHenry, Mary Bazan and Wade Cepulis held top runner awards, while Dave D'Angelo was tagged Most Valuable in football. The Marian volley bailers ended their season by losing to conference rival Im maculate Conception, 15-13, 15-2 at the Lisle Super- sectional. The Hurricanes ended the season at 25-8-1. In local basketball, Johnsburg started the month out by beating North Boone, 84-54 as Rick Neiss tallied 28 including 22 second-half points. They ended the month in good fashion also by claiming the Northern Illinois Classic consolation crown by beating Harvard in double-overtime, 88-88. The Skyhawks supported a l(M record going into the new year. McHenry started out well in December, beating Cary- Grove 75-81 and Grant 85-63. In other McHenry games, the Warriors lost to Jacobs, 82-51, beat Woodstock, 81-55, lost to Crystal Lake Central, 80-41, and was eliminated in the Wheeling Holiday Tourney after beating Maine North, but losing to Wheeling and Roberto Clemente. The locals ended the year with a 84 record. Bob Greve led all conference scorers going into January and Bob Zeller sat in fifth place among conference scorers. In high school wrestling, Johnsburg opened its first season ever in a close 31-30 defeat to Marian Central, then beat Richmond 28-30.
