_MliB-B---11-_---B_-i|1--1--|_i|i--B1<-11--^_|1-PAGE^LAINDEALER - FRIDAY. FEBRUARY », 1*1 A WAN A -- Outreach For Youth | Voter Registration Set ] SSSLn ^ application is made in person, an absentee ballot may be obtained up to one day before an election. As people enter the Wonder Lake Bible church these days, their eyes are drawn to a very brightly colored bulletin board. Covered in "Valentine red" and white, it is bordered with lacy red hearts - 48 in all. There is a name written on each heart and it stands for a "sweetheart" of a person who is active in the AWANA program. The names of all the leaders and helpers are on the hearts. There are also pictures of the AWANA groups. *nie AWANA program is an out-reach program for boys and girls ages kin dergarten through grade 12. The word AWANA comes from the first letters of the phrase, Approved Workmen Are Not Ashamed. Every Friday evening close to 150 children gather at First Baptist church in McHenry (which allows the program generous use of its facilities) for a three-part evening of fun and games, a devotional time, and "tribe time", when they learn practical things about God's creation - such as how to find one's way at night by locating various stars, etc. There are four divisions in AWANA. Children in kin dergarten and grades 1 and 2 are called Sparks ; grades 3 through 5 are Pals and Chums, grades 6 through 8 are Pioneers and Guards, and grades 9 through 12 are Shipmates. Within each division the children are divided into teams when they play games. The program is geared to meet the needs of the whole child. The games are very ac tive, full of fun, running, Jumping and shouting and cheering on of teammates. The devotions are to en courage good character development and spiritual growth. The Tribe Time seeks to develop practical thinking, mental growth and in tellectual stimulation. All of the people involved in the AWANA program are really devoted to the children. Every Friday night they spend from 7 to 9 p.m. with the Sparks, Pals, Chums, Pioneers and Guards, and from 9:15 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. with the Shipmates. Most of the Shipmates are helpers with the younger children. In addition to the regular Friday evening activities, there are leaders' meetings to attend, overnight camp- outs, hikes, swim parties, roller skating parties and just about anything else kids like doing. *nie AWANA program is non-denominational and is worldwide. Several churches in McHenry county sponsor programs. Once a year the clubs of northern Illinois gather for an AWANA "Olympics" day, when they compete with each other in relay games and races. This year the Olympics will be held at Waukegan West high school Saturday, April 4. Shirley and Dave Madsen head the program, spon sored by the Wonder Lake Bible church, where there will be an AWANA night March 22, at 6 p.m. All boys and girls in the area, ages kindergarten through grade 12, are invited to come to AWANA. Bus transportation is available from the Wonder Lake Bible cnurch located at the north end of Wonder Lake, at 7500 Howe road. < For further information about the AWANA program or any -of the services, call the church office at 728-0422; The Woodstock-McHenry League of Women Voters is holding a voters' registration drive beinning Monday, Feb. 23 and ending Saturday, March 7.
