Kirk of McHenry was one of several area residents who enjoyed a visit to Egypt recently, arranged bv several northern Illinois colleges. This is the first of a series on his experiences). "I was amazed to find very ancient customs being practiced with a sprinkle of our modern ways mixed in. We travelled via Pakistanian Airlines from New York, which was an experience in itself. Most of the plane was filled by peo ple strangely garbed and wearing head veils wrapped around their heads. "My seat partner was an elderly woman enroute to Pakistan. We communicated entirely by gesture. Not so with the lovely dark-haired, dark-eyed stewardesses. One very attractive stewardess wore a diamond on the side of her pierced nose, as well as other jewelry in her pierced ears. "Our first stop was Paris, France, where we had time to purchase a few trinkets and mail some postcards while the plane was being serviced. Our next landing was in Frankfurt, Germany. This entailed a long wait, as we had Mown,a tire on the approach and it had to be replaced. "Finally, airborne again, we flew to Cairo, Egypt, and the Nile river. Here we were to get used to seeing soldiers on duty everywhere. There were sandbag bunkers with manned mounted guns on the sidewalks and in the streets in many planes. "It was a treat to see old wooden water wheels being turned by oxen, or donkeys going around in a circle moving an axle that made the water wheel turn. In the background were water buffaloes being used to work the ground that the irrigation ditches made possible for farming. This was dose to. the Nile river where nearly all the people live. "Far in the background everywhere was the endless sand desert. Most of the houses here were made of sun-baked mud and grass bricks, sometimes bult one on top of the other. "Cairo, of course, is a modern city, but the horse and buggy, the donkey and wagon, the man-propelled pushcart, are all part of the street traffic there too. Enormous loads are carried and balanced on the heads of people along the edge of the road, mostly women. Even a couple of crates of live chickens, in some places, were carried this way. Their sense of balance is un believable." More on transportation and the amazing ac complishments of these ancient people next time.
