PAGE 18 - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 29, 1961 New Teachers Join McHenry Schools Shaw Media News Service Four teachers were hired and the location for the next educational meeting of board of Elementary School District 15, scheduled for Feb. 24, was changed to Parkland school during routine business at the regular Feb. 10 meeting of the board. Board members also agreed with district Superintendent Richard Farmer to deny a request for a "Readathon" to benefit Multiple Sclerosis. Farmer noted, "Many good causes request school par ticipation... I don't know how to choose. " The board approved teacher appointments recommended by the ad ministration to the following positions: Carol Dixon to third grade at Edgebrook; Rosemary Turk to math at McHenry Junior high school; Linda Seaborn to language arts at Junior high; and Nancy Bunt to fourth grade at Valley View. They also okayed the release of Libby Ritthaler from her contract to teach second grade at Hilltop to permit her move to Kansas City, Mo., with her husband, who took a new Job. The hirings were to replace vacancies caused by earlier resignations. The board accepted the resignation of two bus drivers: Beverly Hoffman and Dora Bailey, and a playground aide, Kathryn Huff. Approved for em ployment were Wileen Sima as a bus driver and Mary Pautx as a playground fide. Superintendent Farmer said he agonized over consideration of the "Readathon" proposal since the administration gets many requests for student participation for many good causes including a recent one in which students were to bring bags of clothes to school for the Goodwill truck. He has to say "Thanks, but no thanks" to many of these requests which he said amount to 12 or more each year. Board member Jerry Bunting noted that with the Readathon at least the kids would get in some good reading. Board member Frances Larsen agreed that they didn't want the kids to go out to the neighborhoods again soliciting. Part of the Reathathon would be for the to record sponsor pledges ranging* from ten cents to a dollar for each book the child reads. The child would read a many books or newspapers as he or she could during a four-week period, with a parent or teacher certifying each accomplishment. According to descriptive literature, the MS Readathon is supported by the U.S. Office of Education Right to Read program,- the International Reading association, American Association of School Librarians, National Council of Teachers of English, and many other agencies, officials and in dividuals. Following the four-week program, the students would collect their pledges and forward the money to the MS society. Reportedly several schools it Lake and McHenry counties are in volved in the program. The board agreed to hold the line on a $14 assessment for kindergarten books for the coming year following a $2 increase for the current year. In other actions the board approved expenditure of i school monies for in stitutional placement of two special education youngsters under the provisions of Public Law 94-142. The school will then apply for funding under HB 2671 for reimbursement and will receive the difference between what the district spends for the average student and the actual cost of placement of the disabled student. The application preparation was also ap proved. Bell Proposals To ICC Illinois Bell filed a proposal Feb. IS with the Illinois Commerce Com mission to change the ac counting method used In charging for installation of new telephones. Such costs would be treated as current expenses rather than as capital expenditures. MVI11% 5 Pt. Bath S(i By Artcraft ,..Vl f H*« ou * $3DO REFUND Our Rtf. Springer, Illinois Bell executive vice- president - finance. The action parallels rulemaking now under consideration by the Federal Communications Com mission which eventually will affect all telephone companies nationwide. In a related action, the company asked, the Com mission to approve increase in service-establishing and connection charges. "These changes would have no effect on the com pany's earnings or rate of return", Springer said. "Customer who generate the direct costs of installing a telephone would pay for them. The vast majority of our 3Vi million existing customers would see no change in their bills." If the filling is approved, the company estimates that it would recover from customers who cause in stallation and service connection costs about S74 million. The company also proposed a plan to offer customers a "do-it-yourself' option for installing and maintaining their own inside telephone wiring and outlets. Additional details will be filed soon, Springer said. The proposed increase for residence customers in clude: charge to establish service (up S37, from 19 to S46); charge for record changes (up S7, from IS to S13); line connection charge (up S21, from S8 to S29); premises visit charge (up S2.50 from 37 to S9.50)(up outlet wiring charge (up 14.50 for prewiring, from IS to 110.50) up |10 for wiring after building is completed, from 16 to 116); phone handling charge (up 12, from 12 to 14); and jack charge (up 30 cents, from 14.20 to 14.50). Increases for business customers include: charge to establish service (up 133, from SIS to S4ft); charge for record changes (up 10, from S10 to S19); line connection charge (up 115, from S12 to 127) ; premises visit charge (up SI.50, from 10.50 to 111); outlet wiring charge (up 16, from 121 to 127); and jack charge (up 30 cents, from 14.20 to 14.50).- kAnericsn Viewpoints ovo 30% Two Drwwor Filo SAVB 38% Lady's Torry •AVI 34% tfockotl •nu qZcI yw Our Reg. 1.4/ Cabinet Ea.
