In 1908, a small gar­ rison, under the command of Captain Arnaud, accompanied by his young bride, set up camp on the island. Arnaud's son, Ramon (pictured right with Cousteau), was born on the island, a coral atoll only two miles in diameter ; 1 During World War I, Captain Arnaud, unwilling to abandon his post, rejected an offer of evacuation by an American ship. Gradually, food and medicines ran out, and, in 1915, Captain Arnaud drowned while trying to reagh a passing ship that might have provided his garrison with supplies. In the end, Madame Arnaud, her son, and nine surviving women and children were left with a brutal lighthouse keeper who, after seizing all available guns, demanded the services of the women, raping and shooting a mother and a daughter who refused him. In 1917, the women, led by Madame Arnaud, murdered the lighthouse keeper with little Ramon witnessing the terrifying scene. A short time later, the Yorktown, sent to check for enemy Germans, rescued them. _ On the broadcast, Captain Cousteau brings Ramon back to the island.
