That team became Marian when the Hurricanes began missing free throws and the Blue Streaks began hitting theirs. The result was a 69-61 victory for Woodtock over its crosstown rival Tuesday night at Marian. Jerry DeWane's two free throws with 4:58 left in the game gave Woodstock the lead for good at 58-57. In the Next 46 seconds, Marian's Carl Brown and Mike Sabatka both missed front ends of bonus free throw situations. Then with 3:59 left, DeWane hit a 12-footer to SCOTT RITZERT-of Woodstock (45) had the beat on this rebound in the Streaks' 69-61 victory over crosstown rival Marian Central Tuesday night. Kevin Noonan (22) and Carl Brown (54) went up in vain for this carom, but Brown led Marian with 24 points. Shaw Media Photo by Debbie Cohn McHenry Hosts Cardunals It will be Parents Night at Buckner gym tonight when the Warriors play host to the Dundee Cardunals of Paul Judson. The varsity players and cheerleaders will honor their parents in a pre-game ceremony which has become a tradition of the Warrior basketball squad and cheerleaders. The Cards are 5 and 6 in the Fox Valley, (two games behind the Warriors), and are coming off a disap pointing 61-60 loss to Crystal Lake Central last Friday night. The Cards have been an up and down team this season, losing a few close games in the process. The Warriors win streak broken last week at Crown will be ready to play before their parents, and would like nothing better to claim second place in the con ference this season. Crown has already won the Fox Valley. In January, the Warriors won one of the eight close games they played this season 53-50 They would like to repeat tonight. CENTRAL HERE TUESDAY The postponed game between the Warriors and Crystal Lake Central will be made up on Tuesday, Feb. 24. Soph game begins at 6 p.m. and the varsity will be under way about 7:30 p.m. Remember, games will start one-half hour earlier than the Fridav night games. In other Friday games in the FVC, Cary Grove (0-11) travels to Woodstock (4-7); Crown (110) invades Jacobs (4-7); and the Gators of Crystal Lake South (7-4) will match up with the Tigers at Central (6-5). Dick Rabbitt give the Blue Streaks a 60-57 lead. Carlie Lundstrom followed with two more free throws for Woodstock before Brown countered with a 17- foot basket. That made it 62-59 Woodstock, but Marian didn't score again until Ave seconds remained and the Blue Streaks leading 69-59. Woodstock's remaining seven points came on a DeWane basket, a Scott Ritsert free throw, two Todd Burns free throws and two Joe Leahey charity tosses. Joe Johnson scored Marian's last points on a 16-foot jumper. Woodstock made 21 of 30 from the charity stripe, including 15 of 16 in the fourth quarter. Marian finished the game hitting 7 of 13 from the foul line, but only 1 of 6 in the second half. DeWane owned the inside tor the Streaks as he scored 28 points and pulled down seven rebounds. Ritzert helped the Streaks to a 31-19 advantage on the boards with nine rebounds. Marian coach Hans Rokus felt the difference in free throws and Woodtock's domination on the boards were key factors in the game. Woostock coach Jack Renkens was happy his team finally kept its poise late in a close ballgame. Woodstock led 19-12 after the first quarter, and 31-30 at halftime before entering the fourth quarter in a 46-46 tie. Marian managed to stay close or even slightly ahead with its accurate shooting from the perimeter. Marian led by one point three times late in the first half while Woodstock's biggest ad vantage in the first half was 10 points just before the end. "We didn't get too many second shots because they can be awesome on the boards," said Rokus. Yet, he thought his team's offensive movement and shot selection was good. "I was real proud of our effort. We always came back. It says a lot for our kids." Carl Brown paced Marian with 24 points while Brad Gregory tossed in 14. Woodstock hit 24 of 44 shots from the field for 55 percent while Marian was 27 of 59 for 46 percent. Marian, now 12-11, host St. Francis, a West Suburban Catholic Conference foe, in its last regular season game on Friday before opening regional play against North Boone next Tuesday in Harvard. Steve Dikowski Shaw News Service On The Sideline With Dick Rabbitt The Warriors gave the 13th state ranked Crown Vikings all they could handle for the first half last Friday night at Crown. Foul trouble again plagued Bobby Zeller, the Warrior giant at 6'2". and when John Costigan went to the bench, the Warriors lost what ever rebounding hope they had for the evening. The Vikings went on a spree while holding the Warriors down and emerged to a 69-47 win. Crown has now won 19 in a row, and Droke the Warrior string at eight. * . L, . . , I have long thought that after a player has his 5th foul, instead of being out of the game, that maybe some sort of consideration should be given to him and his team. Basketball is the only sport that penalizes a player for an infraction of the rules five times. What would happen if a Waiter Payton were guilty of being in motion five times during the opening period, and was banished for the rest of the game. Hockey gives a penalty, but the player returns, and if our local Chicago baseball teams were assessed some type of penalty for errors, (both mental and physical), we could turn the T.V. off in the first inning. Just food for thought, after a player has committed five fouls, the opposing team gets two free throws, plus the ball out of bounds, or any other penalty the rules committee decides upon, but let the player remain playing. Fans don't pay to see the star or the leading scorer, rebounder, or defensive player, at times play only a part of the game. Wilt Chamberlin has the record of having never fouled out of a professional basketball eme. Fans don't pay good money to see players on the nch. Our good friend, Joe Schlender, coach of the Warrior football team has been rather busy these past few weeks. Not only did he welcome a future cheerleader in the household, but has planned the Fox Valley Football clinic for March 14. the popular coach has put together a clinic that is second to none for high school coaches. It is the second clinic for the Warrior coach at McHenry, and has the backing of the Fox Valley association. We will give more details as the clinic approaches its time. Some kind of record must have been set last Saturday. The Warrior J.V. basketball team under coach El Partenheimer won in five over times over Crystal Lake Central 76-74. Five over times on a Saturday morning is too much. I am sorry that I didn't attend the game and give some advice to the officials, and I can't understand the popular coach sitting there throughout 45 minutes of a, game. Hope he got home in time for lunch. The McHenry High Booster club is looking for your support next Saturday night, Feb. 28. The "Honey Bears" will be here for a volleyball game which will take place after the Annual Alumni game between the odd and even years. Alumni, if you have not signed up for the game, call "Twig" Miller and he will notify you of the practice schedule next week. The Booster club does a lot for the athletic program at McHenry high school, they need your support and would welcome anyone who is willing to helD them in their activities. With around 1,600 students in both East and West high schools, I am sure that there are a lot more than a dozen or so parents interested in the welfare of their children. Let's support the Booster club for the fine job they have done in the past and are willing to do in the future. This week's game goes bade to 1949 at Richmond for the McHenry County tournament. The young Warriors had jumped out to a 29-24 halftime margin and increased their lead to 46-32 at the end of the third period In the final period, the hosts put on a pressure defense that caused the Warriors into many miscues. while everything they put up went in the hoop. The Warriors, however, were able to emerge the victors in a hard fought game* G a r y F r e u n d a n d B i l l Hermann led the locals in scoring with 17 points each. McHenry vs. Crown The law of averaf the Johnsburg Skj travel to Harvard after beating them twice earlier in the year. The Hornets are 5-5 in the Shark and 11-11 overall (pending Thursday's outcome with Hononegah),and both Harvard and the Skyhawks have a chance at second place in -the Shark, behind the 11-0 Marengo Indians. In their first encounter, Dec. 30 in the consolation finals of the Northern Illinois Classic, Johnsburg snatched a double- overtime victory, 68-66. Buckets by Rick Neiss and Tom Pieper in the second extra period bettered one basket by Harvard. Neiss tallied 25 points and Pieper scored 22 points in the championship game, while Frank Jakubicek dominated the boards with 12 caroms. On Jan. 16. Harvard looked for revenge in Johnsburg, but couldn't keep up with the Skyhawks in dropping a 55-52 decision. Although Neiss was held to 12 points, Pieper chipped in 14 and Frank Jakubicek had 12 (10 in the second half) to lift Johnsburg. Harvard is led by 6'1" forward Steve Perechio, 6'3" center Paul Kramaczyk, and 5'11" guard Ken Haldeman. Forward Tim Anderson at 6'2" steadily dumps in 8-10 points per game and 6' guard Mike Snepherd rounds out the starting five. The Hornets are taller than the Skyhawks but have been unable to use its size to its advantage in earlier encounters. The 8 p.m. game on Friday will mark the last regular season game for the locals.
