June says a society for our area was long needed, and I can't agree more. April's meeting is set for the 9th, at 7:30 p.m. in the basement meeting room of the McHenry library. Pleftse come! June also has a request for the people of Ringwood. They are seeking historical type information on Ringwood as they don't have a lot. If you have any old books, or old photos, etc., they would appreciate copies or donations. The library is also acc epting family histories, and, here's your chance to write that book! This is just a history of your family, as complete and correct as possible, but not perfect. Call for more information. Hope to see many of you in April. TRAVELERS Art and Katie Christopher recently drove about 200 miles south of here to a town called Farmington, Hi., 20 miles west of Peoria. Tliey visited their son Dave, who works on a very large farm. She said the weather was beautiful and they had a real good time. Katie's attention was drawn to all the coal strip mining which is very interesting and curious to us "Northerners". Chris and Sally Delby went traveling to Colorado last week. Although the trip was hurried, the break was needed and the nice weather a pleasure. Sally grew up in Colorado and was visiting BIRTHDAYS Birthdays this week start out with Bud Winters, Mar. 23; also on the same day, Loren Harrison, Alan Walk er and Art Krentzen Jr. have their special day. Here's wishing all of you a very "Happy Birthday" and many many more. Exum, Minister 459-4160 FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of March 12, 1931) March blizzard, roaring at a forty-mile clip, swept over McHenry and this part of the country and the spring-like weather was blown to a sudden end amidst traffic and transportation parlysis, which taxed railroad, street, highway and public utility officials to the utmost. Roads were blocked, busses stalled and hundreds of a u t o m o b i l e s w e r e snowbound as the aftermath of the winter's greatest storm, which began at noon Saturday and ended Sunday night. Buss-Page Motor Sales, local Ford dealers, have just received their first new Ford Town Sedan. This body has been entirely redesigned and is larger and roomier than the previous model, although no increase in price has been made. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of March 13,1941) The city and township elections this year will be very quiet. A candidate for reelection is R. I. Overton, who is again seeking the position as mayor. Earl R. Walsh, who has served one term as city clerk, filed his name under that heading again this year. To succeed the city treasurer, Robert L. Weber, the name of Gerald J. Carey, will appear on the ballot. All three aldermen will seek reelection, Jos. M. Regner, of the first ward; A. E. Nye of the second ward and George P. Freund of the third ward. TWENTY-FIVE YEARSAGO (Taken from the files of March 8, 1956) The city of McHenry received an official cer tificate of the population ot the city following recent special census. This verified the unofficial report of the actual count being 2,748. It was interesting to note on the report that the male population is 1,329, while the female population is 1,419. The enumerators deter mined that McHenry had 835 occupied dwelling units as of the census day. Mobilization of an an ticipated 30,000 volunteer workers for the one-day fund campaign for Chicago's educational non-profit television station WTTW is progressing at a rapid pace. Making the house to house drive in McHenry are Georgianna Thornton, C. Dietle, Janice Nardi, Ethel Bailey, Mary Pollock, Elsie Olson, Alicia Wirtz, Cleta McCracken, Agnes Beinapfl, Florence Smith and Pender Weber. These ladies will be assisted by several high school girls. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of March 10, 1971) McHenry county's official population in the 1970 cen sus was 111,555, up 32.5 percent from the 1960 figure of 84,210, the Bureau of the Census, U.S. Department of Commerce reports. The official population of the state was 11,113,976, up 10.2 percent from the 1960 population count, which was 10,081,158. Miss Sue Fayette, daughter of Mrs. Barbara Novak, and a senior major in political science, was honored by Rotary Club International of Quincy for her outstanding academic achievements, along with other area schools. McHenry's share of the state income tax collection for January was announced by Gov. Richard B. Oglivie as $1,066.64. Part of the total distribution of $1,967,216.55, it brings McHenry's city total to $21,257.99 for the fiscal year. _ * * * * More ill health is caused by too much food than too little. * * * * The theory of never saying "no" to children leaves us a bit cold.
