Install ceramic tile yourself and get professional results If you're tired of thai old dull floor covenng, you might warn to make ceramic tile the bright spot in your kitchen. It's ex tremely durable, easy to care for and within' the capabilities of almost any do-it-yourselfer. After a little planning and consultation with your floor covering retailer, a ceramic tile floor can be laid with professional-looking results by following these guidelines • Turn off gas and electricity if appliances are to be discon nected and moved. Remove old floor covering, make sure the floor is smooth, clean and dry, and that all boards of a wooden floor are tightly nailed into joists. How to measure Then, measure the center of each wall and run a chalk line from each centerpoint crossing in the center of the floor. With out using adhesive, place a tile in the angle formed by the chalk lines and lay a straight line to one wall. Adjust your starting point so the final tile in the line comes out flush against the wall. Do the same thing to an adjacent wall and you will reach two walls without the necessity for trimming tiles. • Review the instructions of the tile and adhesive manufac turers and use the proper adhe sive spreading tool. Work only on a manageable area, not the whole room. The first line of tile is very impor tant, for everything else will line up on it. Always place a tile in posi tion; never slide it into place. Press down firmly, line up the next tile exactly against the pre ceding tiles and move out from the starting point. Clean any adhesive that may squeeze be tween tiles as you go along. Cutting tile to fit When you must cut a tile to fit against the wall, two methods are commonly used. One is to measure the space to be filled, then mark the tile and cut or break. jjOR|?P Hoifie Prices «HscH>« wdUU quawtHlos lost. 1 Wo rassrvs the right ta quantities. • c . Draw a line along the back edge of the top tile, marking the "middle" tile. When cut along the mark, the tile should fit per fectly. Tile-cutting methods Different types of floor cover ings require different methods of cutting or breaking. Cut vinyl or composition tiles with a spe cial vinyl knife made by Red Devil and other tool suppliers. These kinds of tile cut easier when warm and may be heated in a lightly warmed oven. Ceramic tile is scored like glass and snapped by either hand-held or table-top ceramic glass cutters. For irregular edges or open ings around pipes, cut a pattern out of heavy brown paper and trace on the tile. Then, after scoring, use special tile nippers to remove the material in small pieces. Make all tiles flush, and clean all excess adhesive from the sur face. Allow sufficient drying time. Many ceramic and mosaic tiles are designed to be finished with tile grout. Red Devil makes several types of grout to provide a lasting seal between tiles. Apply grout uniformly Follow directions. Carefully work grout to a uniform thick ness in every crack. Wipe up excess grout and follow drying instructions. • After drying, clean excess grout from tiles with soap and water. A light spray of grout sealer will ensure additional years of like-new beauty by im proving waterproofing and stain resistance. With the cleanup complete, replace baseboard moldings. Many floor covering retailers carry vinyl moldings available in a variety of shapes and com plementary colors to add a dec orative finishing touch note to new flooring. • 56.87 Rog. 71.07 % hp. heavy duty motor.
