i J> PAGfe 7 - PLAINDKALER - WEDNESDAY. MARCH 25,1*1 Adagio, or stunts performed by partners, is Just one act that the Harrison Gymnastic Circus performs during its show. Above, Cheryl Anderson, sixth grader, steadies herself on the shoulder of coach Rick Wiedemann, her adagio partner. EARL WALSH' So I Hear BIG NEWS - A baseball player, who has yet to prove his worth, signed for less than two million dollars Chicken feed! , With high school and college tournaments in full swing, I have basketballs popping out of my ears In college circles, a flock of favorites have been knocked off It is tough for some teams to pack their bags and silently steal away There is no tomorrow, but some look forward to another year That Quincy team is awsome, especially with their 610" center If they can grow those big fellows down there on the banks of the Mississippi, why can't we do the same on the banks of the Fox? Nobody was going to beat the Quincy team, but a hard fought afternoon game certainly took its toll on the Proviso East boys My opinion -- Two games in one day must take too much out of the players. Other juggling performances in the show include bouncing them off the floor, under the legs, trading with another juggler and the use of volleyballs. Gymnastics has invaded the area in different forms, from tumbling , such as the Tumbleweeds, to Olympic caliber, such as the 12-year-old elite gymnast, Diane Durham. But for the gymnastics team of Harrison Grade School, the art of gymnastics has taken on a circus atmosphere. Maybe that's why they call themselves the Harrison Gymnastics Circus. Like the Tumbleweeds, the circus of coach Jayne McMillan incorporates tumbling manuveurs, and like Olympic Gymnastics, the clan from Wonder Lake uses the balance beam, uneven bars, floor exercises and the e>mmel horse, but unlike most gymnastic circuits, the arrison performers use juggling, team stunts, and daring dives to treat the crowd to the excitement of the "Big Top". Tne circus is a part of the Harrison physical education department and the main purpose of the team is to promote a non-competitive program which can be incorporated into the P.E. program. The circus has performed *t area schools for four years now and on March 19 was at McHenry Junior High. The performers will now show their routine at Harrison on April 29 and 30 at 7 p.m. Story And Photos By Joel Wakitsch r- The High Dive Roll off the springboard is the crowd- pleaser and highlight of the Harrison Gym Show. Above, five McHenry Junior High students take cover on the mats as Jamie Dass, a sixth grader springs over the human obstacle and safely into a forward roll on the other side. Other students were picked from the crowd and added to the chain until a total of 11 "live barrels" were crowded onto the mats. The Harrison coach. Javne McMillan, warns against trying this feat until one has mastered landing safely and feels comfortable jumping over rolled up mats instead of humans. Have no way of knowing how serious they are. but local baseball fans seem to lack the enthusiasm for big leagues as shown previously Most say they don't blame the players for grabbing off those big salaries if the owners are foolish enough to put the cash on the line Then comes a real sour note in their attitude toward the players Such expressions as: Prima donnas No ball player is worth that much Let 'em strike Fans should strike A 240 hitter demanding that much! Mayor Byrne is moving into Cabrini-Green where blazing guns are a way of life I dunno They say she is smart Can't help wondering if she has more guts than sense To soothe a protesting throat.
