FAtiK 14 - PLAINDEALEK - FRIDAY. MARCH 27.1981 Past 65 Appear In Concert by Carl Riblel Jr. Q "In 1970 I went to an attorney for a new will. I am now 76 and retired for 10 years. I told him what I wanted and then the lawyer discussed what provisions could be made for me if and when I would be unable to take care of myself. His principal advice was ~ 'don't give anyone a power of at torney because it confers too much power., ' "Al hnmp I thouoht nvPr what he had said and then I wrote a letter for him to hold in his files that was ad-, dressed 'To Whom It May Concern.' It provided that if I became mentally or physically disabled, a court would appoint him. the at torney who had advised me. to take over for me. 1 mailed (he letter to him "Five years later I had what I call a blackout.' Friends notified the lawyer and on the strength of my to- whom-it-may-concern letter to him. he went to court and was appointed my con servator He had my apartment closed, my .urniture stored and found me a place to live that is very nice -- a combination boarding home and con valescent-retirement home. As I got better, my con servator turned over to me a monthly cash allowance for spending on little necessities. "Now, another five years later, I find the arrangement very satisfactory, although 1 can look back and see a couple of mistakes I made One was that 1 didn't have my signature on the letter witnessed and notarized If my estate were large and there was a flock of greedy relative^, that letter could have been successfully contested But it is a small estate and 1 had no relatives nearby. So there was no problem The other mistake I made was selecting an attorney my own age He died Fortunately. , his old . staff has taken over and the original arrangement is still working out fine Even though my sort of a r r a n g e m e n t c o s t s something, it is not too much and I am protected Perhaps if more elders could make advance arrangements like 1 did. life would be easier for them " -- Evelyn C E A Evelyn obviously is a good judge of people It is wise indeed to make arrangements for the future that are legally binding While Evelyn lucked out. so to say, her mention of "mistakes" should make the rest of us more cautious in making arrangements that are tightly legal Q. "I belong to a senior citizen's discussion club that we call Yesteryear and This Year -- A Comparison ' You can guess what we talk about - the difference between now and way back then How people used to act then and how modern people conduct themselves today. I think old people don't conduct themselves much different from what people did 40 to 50 years ago. But the young people! My goodness, how they conduct themselves. Why is it that there is so much sin today compared to vhen I was a young lady accepting the first of a number of proposals for marriage" I had four fiances before I got married. But we wer e not sinful " -- MayJo V. A MayJo must have been very attractive to handle so many proposals The sinners of yesteryear mainly sinned among friends or in secret Today'-; sinners have gone public They want public condemnation of their transgressions because they do not sin for the pleasure of it, as people used to do. but to prove something; that they can Q "My sister has a wonderful idea for a gift to an elder on his or her bir thday, or for any other gift occasion Give an elder a supplemental medical in surance policy. My sister talked to her insurance agent and then took out a policy for our mother who is 78. Our mother was given the application forms and she filled them out Arrangements then were made for the monthly premiums to be paid by my sister. Don't you think this is a good gift suggestion for elders who may not be able to easily afford a good medical insurance policy0" - - Dorothy S. A A fine example of common-sense gift giving and a good sales idea for local insurance agents. All they have to do now is to take this idea and run. looking all the way for those who want to give to elders. Q "When I applied for Social--Security retirement benefits. I asked SS h e a d q u a r t e r s a b o u t collecting on my first husband's SS and then I asked about being able to collect on my second husband's SS I was told that if I divorced my second husband and then claimed on my first husband's SS that I would then be eligible and I could then remarry my second husband and still collect on the first husband Can that be true"1" -- Virginia B A It may be legal ac cording to Social Security rules, hut such a con venience divorce doesn't seem to be very nice Q "I hear of people who spend hundreds of dollars on hearing aids who still receive no significant help in their ability to hear I want to take an examination, but the telephone is essential to my job and I never knew of jgjyone who can use a hearing aid on the phone Also, do I go to an ear doctor or an audiologist*'" - Jan L A .Ian can go to an otolaryngologist (an ear doctor) who will have an audiologist on his staff The doctor will first examine the ears and then the audiologist will make the necessary tests to determine the degree o. hearing impairment, and then fit the hearing aid if one is needed I am one of the many who enjoy a hearing aid It works perfectly on the phone and .or the first time in many years i don't get wrinkled at people for not "speaking up" on the phone If .Ian is fitted (is .Jan a "she" or a "he"?) all she or he needs to do is get used to wearing the hearing aid Here is how I use it on the phone when the phone rings, or when I start to dial, I flip the switch in the ear piece to the phone position Once talking, I may or may not need to raise or lower the volume No am plifier is needed on any phone I use when wearing my hearing aid. .Jan should forget about her-his reluc tance and make an ap pointment with a doctor The rest is easy, except for paying the bill, which will come to about $400 for the examination and hearing aid. Q. "Our home is paid for but as my wife and I are way past 65 we can no longer do the work around it We have to pay for lawn care, snow shoveling etc Would you recommend that we sell our home and then rent a house with the proceeds from the sale and thus never touch our savings or our fixed income"" - Ralph R.M. A I think Mr and Mrs. Ralph need expert counsel :rom the King County Area on Aging, phone 625-4711 If the Ralphs rent a house, presumably they will have to keep it up An apartment might be best For information and ad vice" on the problems of aging, send self-addressed stamped envelope to Carl Riblet Jr., P.O. Box 40757 Tucson, Ariz.85717. All questions will be answered, either in this column or direct, if possible. No identities will be revealed.
