Leonard Bernstein is rehearsing Washington's National Symphony Orchestra for a special performance of Aaron Copland's 'Lincoln Portrait.' The composition, which requires a narrator (Adlai Stevenson and Eleanor Roosevelt are among the hundreds who have performed the job in the past), is being nar rated by none other than the composer himself. Bernstein coaches and cajoles He makes suggestions and he makes demands, all with good humor and flourish. When the conductor finally makes a small error, Aaron Copland impishly suggests, "Shall we fire the conductor?" Everyone laughs heart­ ily; the occasion is unique. The occasion took place last fall for the nation's birthday tribute to the 80-year-old Copland, once dubbed "the American eagle of composers" by the New York Times On the evening of November 14, 1980, in the Concert Hall of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Bernstein, Mstislav Rostropovich and Copland himself took turns conducting some of Copland's most popular music from his rich and productive career. Preserved for all time on videotape, the historic concert can now be seen on public television 'A Copland Celebration1,' America's birthday tribute to the music and lifelong achievements of Aaron Copland, is the premiere broadcast in the new Kennedy Center Tonight series of special performance programs created from events at the Kennedy Center Hosted by Hal Holbrook, 'A Copland Celebration!' will be broadcast Wednesday, April 1 on PBS.* In addition to the musical performances featured in the broadcast, 'A Copland Celebration!' features exclusive inter­ views with the composer; backstage glimpses of Copland, Bern­ stein and Rostropovich before and after the concert; the aforementioned rehearsal; and excerpts from motion pictures like 'The Heiress' (1949) for which Copland composed the scores.
