Hicksg lOZB LHKI WOODSTOCK Cor Mr of Otd Route 14 4 47 sports [5 file Houston Astros by Bill Virdon A major key to the 1980 Houston Astros was pitch ing depth. We lost J.R.- Richard in July and had to pitch without Ken Forsch for a while. Picking up the slack were hurlers like Vern Ruhle and Joaquin Andujar, pitch ers who didn't figure in the starting rotation at the begin ning of the season, but came on to carry us to the Na tional League Western Division title. And in 1981, we have added to our pitching depth by acquiring free agent righthander Don Sutton and left hander Bob Knepper, who came to us from the Giants. With these two pitchers added to a group of quality starters like Joe Niekro, Nolan Ryan, Forsch, Ruhle, Andujar and possibly J.R., we should be able to field a very strong starting staff. In the bullpen, Joe Sambito continues to develop in to one of the top lefthanded relievers in baseball. With Sambito and the support of righthanders Dave Smith and Frank LaCorte, the Astros should have a solid bullpen for many years. Other pitchers who will merit consideration in spring training are Randy Niemann, Grody Pladson, Bert Roberge and Bobby Sprowl All have enough talent to win a job and all will almost certainly help us sometime during the year. Behind the plate, we have Alan Ashby returning for the third straight season. Alan struggled offensively when he arrived in 1979, but came on strong last season. Battling for the backup spot will be Luis Pujols, who did a good job last year, rookie Alan Knicely and free agent utilityman Dave Roberts. We will have several candidates to choose from at first base this season Danny Heep got some valuable experience at the Major League level last year and could end up playing every day. But he will have a battle with Dave Bergman, Jeff Leonard and Denny Walling for that spot. It looks as if we will go with Rafael Landestoy at sec ond base, Craig Reynolds at shortstop and Art Howe at third base. Landestoy split time at second with Joe Morgan last year and seems ready to step in as a regular. Reynolds is returning from last year and Howe is moving from first to third, probably his best position. With three outfielders like Jose Cruz, Cesar Cedeno and Terry Puhl, I feel we have one of the strongest trios around Plus, challengers like Leonard, Walling, Gary Woods and newcomer Chris Bourjos give us both quality and depth in the outfield. Regarding our chances in 1981, I won't make any pre- dictions. I feel we are a stronger club than we were a year ago, but the entire Western Division is stronger. I just hope that we play to our capabilities and capture the same excitement in the city of Houston as we did a year ago If we do that, we should be in the thick of things at season's end
