MARCH 27.1981 Unethical Insurance Sales Warning Given An increase in the number of reported incidents of unethical sales tactics by some insurance agents has prompted the Illinois Life Underwriters association to issue a warning to con sumers who have been approached to replace their existing insurance with new policies. In a recent interview, Harry Pells. FIC, president of the 6,500-member organization of life and health insurance agents, explained some of the problems and what should be done if you are approached by someone urging you to replace existing insurance contracts. "Recently some com panies and agents have begun to specialize in the practice of 'replacing' whole life insurance with term insurance and urging the consumer to 'invest the difference' into another investment vehicle, such as mutual funds or annuities," Pells said "However, while replacement itself is not illegal, it is seldom in the long-range interest of the consumer to drop existing coverage, especially if that coverage is whole life or a permanent form of in surance," Pells said. These agents often will begin their sales presen tation with comments such as "this product will combat inflation" or "your present company is taking ad vantage nf you". Pells commented In addition, some agents will "twist" facts or omit them in order to get a person to drop an exiting policy and buy a new one instead. Pells noted that replacement of insurance has been a consistent problem within the in surance profession but he noted it has become alar mingly prevalent during the last several years Con tributing to the problem has been the marketing of life insurance by some organizations who use part- time insurance agents with little training of experience in the profession. "For most Americans, life insurance provides a foundation for family financial security. The consumer's decision as to how much and what type of insurance to purchase should be aided by a professional agent with the training and experience necessary to provide sound advice." Pells stated. Pells noted that the Illinois Life Underwriters and its national counterpart, the National Association of Life Underwriters, requires members to meet continuing education requirements to maintain membership In addition, members must adhere to a strict code of ethics that requires them to "keep the needs of my clients always uppermost". ere nnd Thtrt In Business Police Chief Retires Named To Honor Club | Banl Fncfs | Edward Ertl. of McHenry. has been named to the President's Honor club of Central Telephone & Utilities (Centel). Albrecht. who has resided with his wife at 1117 Front Royal court in McHenry for the past 11 years, began his police career as a state trooper in 1941. He saw military police duty on the Alcan highway during World War II, and previous to that had been stationed on the White House grounds in Washington. D C Albrecht began his duties 'as chief of police at the University of Illinois, after a tour of duty in Japan during the Korean war. ending up as provost mar shal at Chanute Air Force base In 1953, the University had 11 security guards at the Medical campus, and Albrecht washired to "make a police department". Under his leadership, the department grew to 112 sworn personnel with full police powers created through an enabling act of the Illinois legislature, written by the chief. Their patrols covered Navy pier and the Medical center, plus Circle campus.
