"We hope to act as a liaison between the residents and our board, so as to work together to make our village board aware of our needs and opinions, so they can make objective and responsible decisions in our behalf "That is why we feel the upcoming April 7 election is so important. "We oppose the possible road assessment, and want ideas for solutions to the many problems that plague our small community. "We are united to bring McHenry Shores together as a community, not to divide it "We, the McHenry Shores Citizens for Better Govern ment, urge our village residents to vote Tuesday. April 7, and let their feelings be known. "Nina L Keen "President, McHenry Shores "Citizens for "Better Government" Assistance is needed in McHenry county to help an Illinois endangered species, the barn owl. Once a com mon and effective rodent controller around farms, the barn owl is now a rare visitor because of a lack of nesting sites and habitat destruc tion. Barn owls combine eyesight 35 times better than man's with incredibly sensitive hearing to make them even more effective than cats at killing rodents. A family of four or five hungry owlets can prod adult owls into catching 50-60 rodents each night The barn owl once readily nested in old barns, warehouses, even church steeples. The rent paid for this housing was controlling populations of mice and rats that also found man-made structures to their liking. But replacement of old barns with more tightly sealed metal structures combined with plowing of meadows and clearing*of forests have affected barn owl populations and their numbers have steadily declined T h e C o n s e r v a t i o n department of McHenry county says the mutually beneficial relationship between barn owl and people that once existed can be reestablished Man-made boxes placed in abandoned farm buildings or unused silos have helped increase barn owl populations in other states, and a similar project is under way in northern Illinois. Landowners with an abandoned or unused silo can obtain plans for con struction and placement of nest boxes from the McHenry County Con servation district, 6512 Harts road, Ringwood, (338-1405) or 678-4431) or the Illinois Department of Con servation. 110 James road, Spring Grove.
