UiW'«Wi» COUPON COUPON., Pitching seemed to be the big question in ore-season practice for the McHenry Warrior nardballers, and after the locals' double loss at the hands of Libertyville and Zion on Saturday, coach Brian Wilson still considers pitching a big question to be answered The Warrior dropped an 11-4 decision to Libertyville and a close 7-6 affair to the ZeeBees of Zion at McCracken field on Saturday. In the loss to the Wildcats, McHenry sent senior Jeff McNish to the mound, who received an early first inning lead when Bob Greve trotted across the plate after being forced in on a walk to designated hitter Jay Whittemore. After McNish gave up two runs on a walk and two singles in the second, his teammates came back in the bottom of the third with a three-run exhibition. Centerfielder Bob Greve and third baseman Rob Kalck walked with one away before Fritz Larsen singled to load the bases. •> Wilson decided to put his team speed to the test and ordered a suicide squeeze with Jay Whittemore asked to bunt while Bob Greve raced home from third. Whittemore fanned at the bunt attempt, but Greve took advantage of a good jump and scored under the tag of Teichman, the Libertyville catcher. Both Kalck and Larsen moved up on the play and In the second game against Zion, the Warriors cut the errors to one, but gave up seven walks in losing the close 7-6 encounter. Returning from his academic test, junior Dave Smith was put the pitching test in ti second game for McHenry. the scampered home on a Libertyville throwing error to give McHenry a 4-2 lead. The Wildcats came back to tie the game at four during their next turn on three singles and a McHenry error. The Warriors then went down in order in the bottom of the fourth while Libertyville helped themselves to six runs in the fifth. Again errors hurt the locals as they committed two costly ones in the inning including a dropped fly ball by left fielder Paul Snyder. Junior Mike Dillon replaced McNish on the mound and gave up only one run the rest of the way as McNisn suffered the loss. McNish pave up 10 runs in four and two- thirds innings of work, thanks to seven McHenry errors and four badly-timed walks. McHenry could muster only five hits paced by Bob Greve with two singles and a walk in three official trips and two runs scored. Fritz Larsen was one for three with one run scored while Dillon picked up one hit in three at temps. Joe Bauml also collected one hit in four trips. Wilson said he was impressed with the Wildcat team and that the Warners missed the services of John Doessel and Dave Smith, who were taking academic tests during the game. "We committed seven errors and gave up four walks at crucial times that hurt us,"Wilson said The junior lasted four innings, giving up 6 hits and three earned runs. He left the game with a 5-3 lead , but Matt Mroz allowed four earned runs in three innings to take the loss. McHenry took an early 2-0 lead in the second when Bob Bryniarski doubled home Smith who had reached first with a walk. Bryniarski then stole third and scored on a SArrifii^p fly Kv Wt flsidcf John Huff. ZiCH JJOt to Smith in the same inning, however; combining four singles and a double for two runs. The Warrior fought bade for three, third- inning runs highlighted by a Joe Bauml lea doff triple. Bob Greve singled Bauml home, proceeded to steal both second and third and scored on a two-out single by Rob Kalck. Bryniarski followed with his second hit of the game, a single which scored Kalck who had also stolen second and third base. Smith got wild in the Zion fourth inning, walking the first three batters, striking out the next and allowing a sharp single oft the bat of M us tain, the Zee Bee shortstop. He finished up the inning on two harmless fly balls, but turned the ball over to Mroz for the remainder of the game. McHenry went down in order in the fifth, and Mroz encountered trouble early in his varsity career. The young junior allowed a leadoff single and a walk which resulted in an RBI ground ball to Bryniarski for Zion's fourth run. He then put out the fire on another groundball and a fly out. McHenry then added to its lead with a lone sixth-inning tally recorded by John Huff who had singled, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Dave Williams and scored on a Joe Bauml single. Both teams traded scoreless attempts before Zion scored three runs on five last- inning hits to pull out the victory. Wilson was happy about his teams' nine hits and eight stolen bases in the second game, but reiterated concern for the pitching game. "We played good defense the second game and ran real well, but we threw way too many pitches," Wilson said. "I don't know how, but we'll have to improve our pitching." Bob Bryniarski led the locals with a two-for- two performance and two RBIs, while both Joe Bauml and John Doessel were two for four. McHenry will take its 0-2 mark back to McCracken for a Wednesday game against Streamwood before travelling to Johnsburg on Thursday. Greve stole four bases on the day, helping his team to 14 total thefts during the two games. The Warriors play Streamwood at home on Wednesday before travelling to Johnsburg Thursday. STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD McHenry Softballers Ready Experience, depth and a winning attitude. Those words best describe McHenry's varsity Softball team for 1981. The Warriors are coming off a 1980 season which featured a regional cham pionship and a berth in the sectionals. With virtually the same cast back for another season, coach Mary Osterman can afford to be optimistic. Sue Haddick and Kathy Bitterman headline a list of seven returning regulars Haddick, an outstanding pitcher, and Bitterman. her batterymate, each have two years of varsity experience behind them Also back are infielders Donna Chesler, Karen Karpavicius and Robin Geiger and outfielders Pam West and Joan Stelmack. Osterman calls Haddick "the fastest pitcher in the (Fox Valley) conference. She threw two no-hitters and a one-hitter last year." Bitterman moves behind the plate after playing third base last season "Kathy is a real hustler," Osterman noted. Chesler is a junior who can hit with power Among the best hitters for average is Karpavicius, who hit .382 last year as a freshman. "Karen led the team in doubles and triples last year and was second in total hits and RBIs She's all- conference material." Osterman added Geiger is also a sophomore and moves to third base after a stint in the outfield last season. She has a strong throwing arm and should be an able anchor on the infield. The coach termed the Crystal Lake fieldhouse "a difficult place to run. The turns are very sharp But I thought we did very well for a team that doesn't have indoor facilities." McHenry returns to action with a dual meet at John sburg Monday, April 6. Action gets underway at 4 p.m. Dick Rabbitt Sue Dehn, a junior forward on Johnsburg's 1981 girls basketball team, was named to the first team of the Shark All-Conference squad by league coaches at a meeting in Harvard on Wednesday. Inge Dschida, a senior forward made the all conference second team for the second year in a row, while her teammate Cheri Kofler made honorable mention all conference as a junior. Joining Dehn on the first team were Beth Kanaly of Marengo, Stacey Neal and Lynette Range of first place South Beloit, and Tracy Stamm of Hononegah. Neal, Range and Stamm were all unanimous choices by the coaches. * Making un the second team were Kim Koch of Harvard, Inge Dschida of Johnsburg, Michelle Hoeft of Marengo, Eva Robinson of South Beloit, Lisa Koski of Hononegah, and Laura McNeany and Kathy Kies, both of Beloit Catholic. With Kofler on the Honorable Mention Team were Lori Kramarczvk and Shelly Jones of Harvard, Jodi Hoch of Marengo, Laurie Bain of Hononegah, Jane Lange of Beloit Catholic, and Mary Miller and Peggy Vogel, both of North Boone. Dehn obtained first team status by sporting a 13.9 point average per conference game in 1981. She also pulled down 8.1 rebounds and was the leading Skyhawk conference scorer. Dehn recently received all-area honorable mention by the Rockford Register-Star. "Sue (Dehn) deserved the first-team honor," coach Dan Stanowski said. "She wasn't unanimous choice because she missed some conference games because of her nose injury, but I think the coaches remembered her for playing as the 'masked person ." Stanowski said he was proud of her performance .during the season, especially her 23-point night against first place Soutn Beloit. "That game helped the coaches make up their minds also," Stanowski commented Inge Dschida gathered second-team recognition for the second time in her career She led the Skyhawks in overall scoring in 1981 with 261 points and averaged 11.5 points per game during Shark play. She also pulled down 5.3 caroms per game. "Although Inge didn't have as good a season as last year," Stanowski said, "she still had good stats compared to the others on the second team, plus she had a few games this year with close to 30 points." Kofler made honorable mention as a junior, hitting 7.8 points during conference activity and hitting the boards for 5.5 caroms per contest. Stanowski expects big things from her in the future. "Cheri was a much improved player this year and deserved the award," Stanowski said. "In fact, some coaches thought she should be higher on the list." Picked as Most Valuable Player in the Shark was Stacey Neal who averaged 24.1 points per game on 51 percent field goal shooting ana 59 percent from the charity stripe for the first-place Sobo's. Beck Weinhandl of Marengo was tabbed Coach of the Year after leading her Indians to a share of first place with South Beloit at 11-1 Her team also sported an 18-6 record overall.
