Badminton Wins The McHenry high school badminton team won two dual matches and is off to an exciting start. In their first match of the season against DeKalb, the Warriors were victorious by a score of 4-3 on both the varsity and junior varsity levels This marks the first McHenry victory over DeKalb in at least three years. Individual winners for McHenry included Jean Hoch at first singles; Krista Kaefei ai -second singles*, Monica Sieverin and Sue Schmitt at first doubles and Deb Bauer 'and Donna Hoch at sec<md doubles. The McHenry girls were com plimented by the DeKalb coach as "a much improved team showing fine sport smanship" In their first invitational of the season, held at Lake Forest, the McHenry girls brought home a third place finish out of eight teams. Jean Hoch earned a second place trophy by defeating singles players from Barrington, Fenton. Hersey and Zion Benton Working with Hoch to capture McHenry's third-place honors were Donna Hoch. Bauer. Kaefer, Sieverin and Schmitt. When McHenry met a tough Conant team, the McHenry crew came out on top, 6-1 on the varsity level and 4-0 on the JV level. McHenry will meet with Conant players in May when McHenry will compete in the Conant Invitational. After their Conant match. McHenry hosted Rolling Meadows The Rolling Meadows team*""" con frontation represents the only McHenry defeat of the season. Rolling Meadows won the match by scores of l- 6 on the varsity level and 0-7 on the JV level The Warriors travel to Larkin on Wednesday. April 1 before taking Streamwood on April EARL WALSH' So I Hear Tankers Win Third As Gregg Stars Keith Gregg scored 11 goals and Bob Schaeffer added five to propel the McHenry water polo team to a 20-4 rout of Palatine last week. Gregg's output gives him 18 goals in the last two games, both of them victories for coach Mike Shanahan's Warriors. "Keith is like a forward or center in basketball. We try to get him the ball as much as possible and he has been scoring the goals for us so far," Shanahan said. Rob Grom added four goals for the winners, while Ken Pociask had three and Darren Cepulis one. The balance in scoring has pleased Shanahan, since opponents haven't been able to use a sagging defense in an attempt to put the clamps on Gregg. "We ve moved the ball real well and it has helped us so far. Our goalie, Scott Budaj, has also done a fine joD," the coach added. Shanahan will learn more about his team in the games ahead, since the Warriors take on two toughies in St. Charles and St. Viator. "The next two or three games will tell us quite a bit about what kind of season we're going to have," he said. McHenry ho6ts St. Charles Thursday, April 2 in a 5 p.m. encounter. From way out in Idaho came Bob and Edie Meyer to visit the old home town. Many of you will remember them as operators of the Trout Farm along Rte. 120 West (now Elm St.). Their visit to our home was short But, it was nice to have them call and nice to .hear they still get the Plaindealer From Naples, Florida comes a letter from John and Gail Wagner, enclosing ticket stubs to show us they went to Fort Meyers to see the White Sox beat the American League Champs of Kansas City, 12 to 5. The Wagners get the Plaindealer in Florida during the winter and follow the local news in Beautiful Downtown Volo during the summer They add a note to say hello to Tom and Nora Murphy Just visited the Murphys a few days ago and found them busy and pleasant as usual. Tom was telling about the Skyhawk Pitching Is Season Key Johnsburg baseball coach Jim Meyers is expecting improvement in his team this season How much improvement, you ask? "We've won only 11 games the past two years. This year I think we're capable of winning 50 per cent of our games, which would be around 11." The Skyhawks launch the 1981 season with three toughies. and Meyers wilK soon know if his prediction is an accurate one "We open against Crystal Lake South (April 1), McHenry and Grayslake. I think those three games will tell us quite a bit," said Meyers recently A great deal of the Skyhawks success will depend on that old baseball standard, pitching. "That's what hurt us last year We gave up too many walks and they came back to haunt us." Meyers recalled This season he is looking to fivp young men to toe the mound. The leading candidates are senior lettermen Rich Preston and Randy Wakitsch andjunior returnee Pete Barroso Junior Dan Williams will get a shot at pitching, as will Larry Dix "Overall, this is probably the best group of players we've had in three years." Meyers said "We've got good speed and defense and I think we'll hit fairly well We have to cut down on our strikeouts If we move the ball around. w£ can force the other team to make mistakes," he declared ' The defense will be an chored by several players with experience leading the way are seniors sJohn Armon at first base; Doug Wickman at second or shortstop; Dave Maurer, a returning all-conference performer at third; and outfielder Scott Valentin. Also competing for playing time will be junior infielders Tom Pieper. Rob Peisert. Mike Leon and Jeff Bart- mann; outfielder Roland Reymann and utility players Joe Meyers and Scott Zelke. "Overall the kids have good baseball sense and want to play The weather has been a pleasure; we have been able to get outside quite a bit, which is a big help." Meyers added. In addition, the team has spent a great deal of time grooming the "school diamond and Meyers said it is in excellent condition "Last year, our fielding suffered because the field wasn't in good shape Even though a kid got in front of the ball, you never knew if he would field it cleanly or get a good hop. We think we've solved that problem now." Meyers sees Marengo. Mononegah and North Boone as the teams to beat in the conference race "If everything goes like it should, we'll be an improved team," Meyers said "If our pitching doesn't hold out, we're in trouble." Warrior Netters Place Second McHenry's youthful tennis squad put up a valiant effort and placed second in its inaugural meet Saturday Six of the 12 Warriors who competed were freshmen or sophomores The last matches of the day decided the contest. With McHenry and Hoffman Estates tied going into the last two matches, Ed Donahue and Dave Bauer, McHenry's number one doubles team defeated Rockford Bovlan 8-2 But Hoffman Estates defeated Johnsburg 10-0, to give them the team championship. > McHenry results found Scott Rhode placing second; Randy Glick. third; and Brad Salman and Chris Stumbris first in singles. Marian Nine Has New Coach Marian first-year baseball coach Karl Mathews has inherited a 2-18 record from last spring, but hopes the Hurricanes will improve on that mark this year. Six lettermen return, giving Mathews experience at key positions. Returning are seniors Tim Sherwood, Steve Wett and John Jozwiak and juniors Jim Burroughs, Tom Schermerhom and Don Rickert. Other seniors on the team are Kevin Noonan, T.J. Baumann, Dan Carzoli and Don Roughan. The latter player gives the Hurricanes an added dimension -- he is the only left-hander on the team Rounding out the roster are Dave Rickert, Chris Potenzo, Steve Schiera, Matt Hayden, Jim Huemann, John Crilly, Bill ' Blume and Chet Kopec, the lone sophomore on the team. The usual contenders - Immaculate Conception, Benet and Montini - are expected to provide the top competition once again in the West Suburban Catholic Conference. Mathews said the team strengths will lie in hitting and improved defense. He said the goals are to compete with the teams in Marian's backyard, such as Johnsburg, Harvard and Marengo. The Hurricanes open their home schedule with a game against Woodstock April 3.
