PAGEf-P t * 5 EALER - FRIDAY. APRIL 3.1*1 1 Warriors Tumble 14-0 UNSAFE LANDING-Dave Smith of McHenry (at left) hovers inches over the plate in what appears to be the first Warrior run in Wednesday's second inning. Smith tried to score on a passed ball, but Streamwood pitcher Mark Iden, (11), snared the ball after it deflected high into the air and tagged Smith on the shoulder as he went by. Umpire Stan Block got no argument from Smith on the out call. The junior Smith collected two hits for the Warriors. STAFF PHOTO-JOEL WAKITSCH The McHenry baseball Warriors committed six errors, walked six Streamwood batters, went through four pitchers in five innings and sent no. more than four batters to the plate in any one inning Wednesday at McCracken Field. The obvious need hardly be mentioned, but for the statisticians among the readers, the final score read 14-0 in favor of Streamwood in a game halted after 5 inning because of the high school 10-run rule Young Jay Whittemore took the mound in a rocky showing to say the least After hitting the leadoff man with a high inside fastball, the junior proceeded to serve up a single and a walk to load the bases Rob Kalck forced a man at the plate with a quick toss from his third base slot before Whittemore walked in the first, and winning run of the ball game. Coach Brian Wilson had seen enough and summoned in Jeff McNish, who proceeded to allow one run on a wild pitch and the last run of the inning on a deep sacrifice fly ball to right field Streamwood led 3-0 with only one hit to its credit McHenry did have at least one man on base in every inning. but a tight Streamwood defense and a Gator Hurler No-Hits Skyhawks, 9-0 Johnsburg baseball coach Jim Meyers was hoping to get a good look at his team's offensive prowess in Wednesday's opener against Crystal Lake South Dan Gallagher never game him a chance. Gallagher, the Gator's superb left-hander, stopped the Skyhawks cold and won an easy 9-0 decision. Gallagher struck out 19 and was credited with a no-hitter. "He did a real fine job He was very impressive," said Meyers after the game "Of course, he got an early lead because of our mistakes and that took a lot of pressure off of him early." The Gators roughed up Johnsburg starter Rich Preston for eight runs - only three of them earned - in the first two innings. Several errors put the Skyhawks in a hole early, a hole from which they never emerged Preston walked the leadoff batter, then struck out Jim Goodwin. But the third strike got past Skyhawk catcher Randy Wakitsch, allowing Goodwin to reach first and the other runner to reach third The Gators pulled off a successful double steal and South had a 1-0 lead A walk and a strikeout set up the next scoring for the visiting Gators After a fielder's choice produced the second out of the inning, Preston allowed a pair of singles sandwiched around a walk. One of the hits was by Todd Marshall, who ended the game with three hits and three runs batted in. Crystal Lake endedthe frame with a 5-0 lead. Gallagher walked the first two Johnsburg batters he faced, then struck out the side to end the threat. The strikeouts began a pattern that would last the entire game. Gallagher would start each batter with a live, moving fastball, then follow with a sharp curve or a tantilizing change-up. "We took far too many strikes," said Meyers. "A lot of times we'd fall behind 0-2 in the count and it's hard to go up there swinging when you're that far behind in the count." Crystal Lake scored three times in the second, all of them unearned runs Goodwin reached on an error and stole second. He took third when a throw from the outfield was wild, then scored when Preston uncorked a wild throw on Gallagher's tapper to the mound. Ed Kothera tripled to drive in a run and he scored on Marshall's sacrifice fly The two hurlers then settled into a good old-fashioned Stcher's duel. Gallagher retired 12 of the next 13 men he ced. Preston stopped South on only three hits over the last three innings he worked. The hits were a pair of harmless singles, and Marshall's home run in the fifth The latter hit was a hot shot that eluded a diving Dave Maurer at third, then tightroped down the left field line. "All in all I think Rich (Preston) pitched pretty well," Meyers noted. "Take away the mental mistakes and you have a pretty close ballgame." Larry Dix came on in relief of Preston in the sixth and allowed a walk and a double to Marshall. The right-hander earned the praise of Meyers, who said he was happy with Salem Seeks^Teams JOHNSBURG HIGH SCHOOL 1981 BASEBALL SCHEDULE Wed., April 1 Crystal Lake South - Home-4 p.m. Thurs., April2 McHenry -Home-4p.m Mon., April 6 ° Graysalke - Home Wed., April 8 Grant-Away Thurs., April9 Crown - Home -4 p.m Fri., April 10 at Marian Central-4 p.m Mond, April 13 Harvard-Home Wed., April 15 at Hebron-4 p.m. Thurs., April 16 at Marengo, 10a.m. Mond., April 20 Hononegah Thurs , April 23 at Beloit Catholic Fri., April 24 at Round Lake-4 p.m. Mond., April 27 at North Boone - 4:15 p.m. Thurs., April 30 at Harvard, 4 p.m. Fri , May 1 at Richmond, 4 p.m Tues., May 5 Marengo - Home Thurs., May? at Hononegah-4:15 p.m. Mond., May 11 Beloit Catholic - Home May 12-18 IHSA Regionals Thurs., May 15 atCary Grove Mon., May 18 at Crown-4 p.m. Thurs., May 21 North Boone May 23 & 25* IHSA Sectionals June 1 & 2 IHSA State Finals All games start at 4:30 p.m. unless otherwise specified. Crystal Lake's big inning was followed by a five-run barrage in the second, creating a 9-1 Gator lead The Hurricanes answered with seven runs in their half of the third, but the rally fell short South added an in surance run in the home end of the third. The game was called after four and a half innings because of darkness John Jozwiak was the starting and losing pitcher for Marian He was relieved after one and two-thirds innings by Jim Burroughs Don Roughan led the Marian offense with a homer and Tim Sherwood added two singles. Junior Jackie Weber, freshman Nancy Walsh and seniors Julie McLaughlin and Marge Bokowy have all elected to join the team for the first time in their high school careers. The Marian starting lineup has been set after only one week of practice The pit ching chores will be handled by Weber, freshmann Deb Knox and senior Tina Zachari, while Maggie Monson will handle first string catching duties Big senior Sandi Kasting will strart at the first base sack, while Guerin and Aim will handle the middle of the diamond from second and shortstop respectively. Joyce Kennebeck, a junior, seems to have a lock on the hot corner. With McLaughlin in left, sophomore Jannet Corcoran in center and Nancy Walsh in right the Hurricanes will have a go-get-'em outfield Muldowney figures Bokowy to fill the designated hitter slot. Muldowney concluded that his defense will be the strong point along with a "sur prising hitting attack." • • • JOHN'S PRE-SEASON * • * Little League - Softball BLOWOUT! With one out, however. Greve was snuffed out on a double play grounder to the shortstop by John Doessel. In the second inning McHenry was thwarted on its best scoring chance of the day. I^eft handfcd hittef Dave Smith began the stanza with a blazing grounder down the first base line for a single He swiftly stole second before Rob Kalck moved him to third on a bunt to the third baseman Then on a pitch in the dirt, the Streamwood catcher John I^esner deflected the ball high into the air and Smith tried to score from third Iden rushed in from the mound, snared the errant ball and tagged the spinning Smith just inches from the plate. Iden had faced six men in two innings t-he hard way. while his teammates mounted a 6-0 lead in the first half of the inning McNish sweated his way through a scoreless third inning thanks to a defensive gem by his teammates. After walking Streamwood third baseman Dave Vincent and allowing a sharp single up the middle to the opposing catcher. McNish served up a fastball that Pat Hickey of Streamwood lined to Warrior shortstop Dave Williams The junior shortstop tried to make amends for his two errors in the second inning by snaring the rocket and flipping in second ro catch the runner off base Joe Bauml looked to first and fired a strike to Bob Brvniarski. but I>esner made it back to the bag by an eyelash to avoid the would- be triple play. The inning ended on a grounder to Joe Bauml at second For the locals. Dave Smith, was two for two with singles, and Bob Greve and Bob Brvniarski each managed a single in two at bats. The Warriors used pitchers Mike Dillon and Dan Ix>ng before it was over as coach Brian Wilson wanted to look at other pitching prospects "I guess I better see what these guys can do now. before conference games come around," the coach said as he pointed in my direction "Can you pitch0" The 0-3 Warriors travelled to Johnsburg Thursday Joel Wakitsch Plaindealer Dix's performance. Dix had good command of his pitches and kept the Gators off balance in his two innings of work. Sixteen Skyhawks saw action in the game, but nonewere impressive at the plate. The Crystal Lake fielders had an easy day, and were called upon only twice to make defensive plays. "That was as much Gallagher as anything else," Meyers said. "But we weren't aggressive at the plate. That's one thing we're going to have to change if we're going to win games." According to Harvey Brown of the department, above, walleye should be running at the dam as long as the water remains in the 50-degree range. Brown said walleye ias large as three pounds had been netted at the dam recently. The fish are caught by shocking the fish with enough electricity to stun, but not kill them. The department was looking primarily for walleye and northerns to be used for breeding.
