She will be 88 on July 20. 1981 It would make her birthday perfect to get such a greeting from the President of the United States." -- Lorraine M. I . have a good retirement income and could make installment payments on the go-now. pay-later idea. Is that possible? We don't have any of the usual credit cards." - Fred A A Some of the major airlines offer instant credit. Fred can make the reser vation and then apply at the tjr>lrp« eouaier whpn be goes to get me tickets. He Should have no difficulty if he can show that he is able to pay off the debt Q "The Arizona sun has addled your sensitivity. Mr Riblet. Your response to Nelda B . who criticized poor old Minor who wanted a chocolate cake while sulking about it instead of telling his family, was a sexist answer, like your opinion about the precedence of sons before daughters in Minor's letter. Why didn't you tell Minor that his sons and daughters i whoops! daughters and sons) aren't mind readers? Why did you call Nelda 'naughty' and Minor just 'misunderstood' We women are tired of males Who are accustomed to being catered to. They can cater to themselves Don't print my name, just use initials" - .Jeanna R A .Jeanna is a name too nice to hide behind an initial Nelda wrote that she didn't BE H LTH Y« WEALTHY, AND WISE Ride less and walk more, Frown less and smile more, Eat less and chew more, Preach less and practice more, Talk less and read more.' I'm sorry it offended her, but Nelda was too hard on Minor and 'naughty' was a less- than-strident way of saying it. Jeanna might like to know that Minor s desire to "be catered to" resulted in an outpouring of sympathy with 18 cakes and as many recipes sent to him by ladies who thought he had good excuse to be unhappy about the kinds of birthday presents he has been iirctri VMg from hiS' auuii children Who cares whether it is "sons and daughters" or vice versa9 In most cases, ladies go first Can't they let males have a little precedence; like boy and girl, man and wife and sons and daughters" Q. "I am a widow with one son. My home is free of debt and I have some small savings certificates and some government bonds. If all those, including the deed to the home, are put in joint ownership with my son. can he sell the home and the bonds and take the savings if I become physically or mentally unable to take care of myself, or do as he wishes with them" Can he cash it all in without going to a lawyer or other red tape9" - F'helvn C A Fthelyn needs sound legal advice She can go to a legal clinic or the locai Legal Aid society and get help to set it all up properly Q "My husband's pension with the telephone company was frozen as of June 24. 1979 because of the new man datory retirement at age 70. The union signed a new contract with the phone company last August that gave a nice raise in the pension plan but my husband won ! get the raise because he was 65 when the pension was frozen. But he is still an active employee of the company. This is age discrimination My husband pays union dues, taxes are taken from his pay and he pays Social Security now just as he has for 40 years with the phone company. How can we fight this?" -- Mrs L.L.T. A If I ever heard of a dirty trick, Mrs. L.L.T,'s husband is getting one He should hire legal help and have the Iawv0r get full details from ixn'n (he union and the company The union should fight for him If it does not. it is a lousy union. He may have to go to court and if he does he may be able to get others who have been similarly discriminated against to join suit with him. He should fight every inch of the way to an unfrozen pension Q "My wife and I took a supplementary insurance policy with national in surance company. The premiums run about $800 a year for hospitalization, cancer insurance and convalescent care. The care part doesn't amount to much Is this company dependable9 A locai in surance office said they had never heard of it." -- L.J.A. A Watch out for that company. As a test I applied for a policy with the same company. Back came a policy festooned with green ribbons (I can't name the c o m p a n y b e c a u s e questionable insurance companies sue at the drop of the hat if I look at them cross-eyed.) I couldn't un derstand the fine print in the policy so I put in a phone call to the outfit's president. He had his lawyer talk to me instead. "My wife and I have $3,500 in a savings bank at 5 5-percent interest JVe have set it aside as a burial fund I am 83. and my wife is 73. I say " there are more profitable places for our savings. My wife thinks not. ("an you offer any better suggestion that would give us the right of instant with drawal?" - Walter F T. A Walter and his wife can place the money in 30-month time certificates at about 12 percent compounded in terest. If he or she, or any other authorized person, makes instant withdrawal to pay for burial, the penalty for not waiting until the time limit on the savings deposit expires is small and worth it for the higher interest rates rate. Walter and his wife can go to a savings bank and have the conditions for a time certificate thoroughly explained. Some of the young people working at such banks these days seem to become impatient with elders and don't explain too clearly, probably because they don't understand it too well themselves. A mature bank employee can explain it best. Write to Carl Riblet Jr with self-addressed, stamped envelope at Box 40757.
