"Antony and Cleopatra," William Shakespeare's epic tragedy of love and empire, is set to air Monday, April 20 on public television as the third production in Season Three of The Shakespeare Plays.' Colin Blakely and Jane Lapotaire (pic tured) star as the ill-fated loversjn this bpulent and visually in novative production, directed by Dr. Jonathan Miller. Jane Lapotaire, who plays Cleopatra, is a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company. Her recent Broadway debut in the title role of the Royal Shakespeare Company's "Piaf" was a sensation Miss Lapotaire was seen earlier on public television in the title role of "Marie Curie," and has a long and distin guished list of stage credits Colin Blakely, the world-weary but still ardent Antony, is one of England's most respected and best-known actors, equally at home on stage, m television and in films. American film au diences remember him from such motion pictures as "Saturday Night and Sunday Morning," "Murder on the Orient Express," "Equus," and the current "The Dogs of War." He has been seen on American television many times, memorably in the starring role of Laurence Oliver's courtroom adversary in "Love Among the Ruins." His stage credits include starring roles with both the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Old Vic. Dr. Jonathan Miller, who is the executive producer for Seasons Three and Four of The Shakespeare Plays and the director of "Antony and Cleopatra," modeled the costumes and the set designs for the production on paintings of ancient times by artists who were contemporaries of Shakespeare--most notably, the Italian painter Veronese. Thus, instead of the togas, sandals and Egyptian headdresses audiences might expect, they will find costumes representing a sumptuous jumble of periods-a hodgepodge,' in Miller's phrase, of Elizabethan and ancient costume. "What we are trying to do," he says, "is pre sent the worlds of Rome and Egypt as Shakespeare might have seen them in his mind's eye when he wrote the play." "Antony and Cleopatra" is the fifteenth production to air in The Shakespeare Plays which, by the end of its six-year span, will have presented all 37 of Shakespeare's dramatic works •CHECK LISTINGS FOR EXACT TMK.
