Grandad's Magic Box The old radio is useless now. It rests in a long-forgotten corner in the darkness of a seldom-used closet, tossed there when it could no longer perform the magic of another day. At one time, the radio was a companion, a friend tried and true. In those days I rarely left its side. We go back a long ways, with the help of freakish atmospheric phenomena from time >to time, that little black box transported me to exotic places like New York or Chicago. Spots on the map to some, cut milieus of heroism for a young sports fan. to goin.g to be...OUT OF HERE! It's gone! It's "15! Thrrc's a new home run seeder sf si! time and It'* Henry Aaron.' V. It was a cool spring night in the Midwest but it was like summer in Atlanta. Ana a fellow named Aaron placed his indelible mark on the baseball record book by rerouting a fastball and sending it over the left field fence. The radio took me there that night. I was at Milo Hamilton's side as he called the historic homer from the press box. I felt the chill he must have felt when that ball cleared the barrier. I too was waiting at home {date to shake the hand of the man who had passed the immortal Babe Ruth. The radio had done its job, filling the air with sights and sound of the night. I was not surprised. After all, hadn't the radio taken me to Green Bay on a frigid December day five years earlier? - "Starr takes the snap. It's the quarterback sneak and he's into the endzone for a touchdown! And the Green Bay Packers are going to be NFL champions for the third straight year." I never doubted Green Bay would score. That was another part of the radio's magic; it could reassure me and tell me everything was going to come out all right. Never fear, it whispered above the crackle of the static, I've never let you down before and I won't start now. The radio spun its spell in the house long before it worked its magic for me. My grandfather bought the set many years before, and it had comforted him too. "Two and two to Harvey Kuenn, one strike away. Sandy into his windup. Here's the pitch. Swung on and missed - a perfect game!" Oh, how he loved Koufax! And how the little black box never let him down. Grandpa could see Koufax dn the mound, the veins taut in his neck, the left arm windmilling curveball after curveball past the bewildered batsmen. He could see Sandy because of the radio. It gave him eyes and ears he never had. The radio gave Grandpa heroes and moments to remember. Tliat little box never missed the big events. "Greer to inbound the ball. He throws it deep and Havlicek steals it. K.C. Jones has it but oh what a play by Johnny Havlicek!" Triumph and tragedy, happiness and history. The sentinel of good news and bad, the radio did it all. With the flick of a switch and the twist of a dial, the adventures of Mikita and Mikan, Graziano and Groza were brought to life just for us. Even when television became more popular, the radio was ever faithful. U would be waiting for me whenever I needed it, even if I had cheated it by stealing glances at the glowing image of the television. Television, of course, had charms of its own. We could see the instant replays and judge the plays on our own. We could * hear the unique home run calls of Jack Brickhouse: "Back, back, back. Hey hey! A home run for Ernie." But radio had redeeming qualities of its own. After all, Howard Cosell was on television, not radio. Maybe it was only coincidence, but as the radio died, so did uiC j~j . Suddenly Hank stopped hammerin', Sandy stopped curving Jenny Nielsen, daughter of Mr and Mrs. Karl Nielsen. 2407 Villa Lane, has qualified for the United States Gymnastics Federation state meet, to be held in Galesburg, 111 ., May 9 and 10. The Hilltop Elementary student almost earned enough points in a meet at Batavia on Saturday Jenny scored 30.87 overall points, including 8.25 in the vault, but fell just short of the required total Jenny has earned over 30 ribbons in her gymnastic endeavors She is hoping to add to that total at the state meet. It hapnend all at once, and suddenly there was nothing the radio could do. It was only a plastic shell, filled with tubes and wires, yet it was something much more. I doubt that I wept when the radio passed away. But in looking back I think I should have. We should always mourn the passing of a friend, especially one so loyal. And now the radio rests in a corner, without a whimper of protest despite the many years of disuse. It does not curse its successor, nor does it beg for another chance. The radio cannot recapture the magic of another day. Those days linger only in the memory. But I owe those memories to the little black box and the magic it once held.
