/ A IIKLPIV; r.-\ws ANIMAL WELFARE ASSOCIATION P.O. Box 205 • Crystal Loke Illinois 60014 •(815)459 2641 by Carla Bennett Jeffrey Hurtt and Mildred Supol have personal reasons for not liking steel-jaw traps. Jeffrey, 16 of Crvstal Lake's Forest ' Hills, discovered a small dog in a trap at Chestnut and Elm last fall. The dog was bleeding heavily and in much pain. Chancing a bite (which he did not get), Jeff released the dog and carried her home* The Hunts searched for its owner thfough newspapers, neighbors,- police and Helping Paws, then reluc tantly called Animal Con trol, who came for it. They need not have feared calling, as Animal Control gets medical help for injured animals. In fact, this is a good time to mention that our county is very lucky indeed to have such a well-run organization, run by such caring people as Dr. Johnson and his staff. Helping Paws is grateful to Jeffrey Hunt for his caring enough to get involved Mildred Supol of Cary knows first hand, too, of the misery inflicted by the traps Her big, beautiful cat was caught in one a half a block from her home on the river's edge. He did survive because someone found him in time and he received prompt veterinary attention "Now, every time I see a woman wearing fur I think, 'How dare you!"' says Mrs Supol. "1 will never own a fur of any kind and I have no respect for anyone who does!" Mrs. Supol is presently involved in getting people to support anti-trapping legislation and urges'people to write to their legislators in this regard She also urges us all to send letters to State Rep Jill Zwick, Box 4 - 554 Bonnie Dundee Rd . East Dundee, 111 . 60118 Ms Zwick intends to introduce legislation in Illinois against the traps She especially would like to receive specific accounts of children or domestic animals caught in traps, as it seems that, even though the suffering is the same, the general public can relate more to these instances than to those involving wild animals and birds. She will need all the support she can get as the trappers have a strong lobby and, in addition, are backed by the NRA. who. it seems, are also threatened by the thought of trapping being abolished Meanwhile, we can all help bv refusing to buy fur items and by becoming vocal and outspoken about the matter Let's strive for the day when the public is so knowledgable about how fur is come by that wearing fur will be embarrassing rather than impressive All pet adoptions must be validated by the signing of a contract along with the adoption fee which includes the cost of the spay or neuter surgery from a vet of Helping Paw's choice, or a deduction from the cost of the surgery if done by a vet of your choice. When adopting a pet through Helping Paws please, for your future reference, keep name, address and phone number of the person from whom you adopted pet.
