Lakemoor-Lilymoor Area Margaret Karas 385-4934 Drama At Sea On Lily Lake Saturday,.May 2, started as a bright cool day, with brisk winds blowing. Horseshoe pitchers had gathered at the field for this first practice session of the season. Some one glanced towards Lily Lake. Then "Is that boat turning over?" Sure enough, a boat some distance from shore was upturned and two adults and a boy were in the cold water screaming for help. Someone ran inside and called the McHenry Rescue squad. What else to do? Doug Alheit and Mike Schmidt drove to the beach on 120 where a boat with a motor was anchored. The motor wouldn't start, and Doug got wet feet. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, the horseshoe court that is, Glenn Spath decided to try to get to a boat on the point via motorcycle, but he got stuck in the swampy area, and got his feet wet Then, to the rescue came young Jack Spears of Lakemoor. Aided by friends, he carried his small boat from his home to the lakeside. Never has so much energy been expended with such dramatic results. Jack, rowing his little boat, out raced the motor boat put into the Lake at the beach by the McHenry Rescue squad, retrieved the boy from the water, and brought him to shore The two men were picked up by squad members in their boat. All three of the frightened, near frozen people were treated by volunteers from McHenry Stations I and II and Holiday Hills They were then taken to McHenry hospital, treated and released Three very happy persons can be very grateful to a group of observing horse shoe players, some very helpful people, a young man named Jack Spears, and the volunteer rescue squads of the area--- plus life jackets. TEXAS WEDDING Alma and Bud Hueckstaedt, with son Rusty, took a long drive to attend the wedding of grandniece Lisa Evans and Richard Bartholomew, on May 2. The Hueckstaedts left Lilymoor April 30, had one overnight in a motel, and were in Rockwall, Tex. on Saturday. The lovely ceremony was held at the Episcopal church, with Lisa's sister I^aura as maid of honor. Parents of the bride are Judy, Alma 's niece, and Ken Evans. Rusty left Texas by plane Sunday, as he had to be back to work on Monday. Alma and Bud stayed at Judy'6 until the 4th, and then started the long drive home. An overnight at a hotel outside of St. Louis proved expensive and not up to standard. So Alma wrote a letter of complaint to the motel headquarters. Should be interesting to read the reply. Glad you're home safe with another happy wedding memory tucked away in your memory bank. COMMUNITY LOSS Sallie Rogers, a resident of Lilymoor since 1947, died May 1 at the McHenry hospital She had been a charter member of the Women's Auxiliary of Lilymoor. a group of ladies who were active in the growth of the subdivision. She and her husband were the growers of the beautiful maples that can be enjoyed by everyone driving on Lily I^ke road Sympathy is extended to her family and friends Sympathy also goes to the Jessie Wafkins family, on the death of his mother April 28 Christine Jepsen of Wonder Lake, died in McHenry hospital after a surgical procedure. The saddened grandchildren include namesake Christine, Stephen and Sherry Watkins LILY LAKE LEAGUE All of the ladies of the L L.L.L. celebrated fheir respective birthdays on the same day, Wednesday. May 6 A party atmosphere prevailed at a local restaurant where they gathered for dinner. The ladies then adjourned to their regular meeting place at the I>akemoor Municipal building, where a special take. decorated with "Happy Birthday LLLL" awaited them After cake and coffee the ladies enjoyed their evening of bunco Julia Kraus won two prizes, first and special; Mildred Narcarti won second; and Connie O'Rourke, looking very well after her surgery, won the booby prize. Where else can you get that many benefits with one little walk" LIBRARY During the remodeling of the Civic Center, the McHenry Shores Library services had to be suspended and, because of personal circumstances, there were difficulties in reopening it. However, lately I have been approached by several people who are interested in seeing it open again It would certainly be a nice thing, especially during the summer I was always thrilled to see the children come in every week to take books out Reading is such a nice habit to get into early in life. I am not knocking television, but n for stimulating thoughts there is really nothing like good books. So, if there is anyone out there who feels the same way about the library, please give me a call (after 3 p.m. on working days) and let us get together to revive our library. If you have an hour a month, it would help us open the library on at least one day a week and would still not place too much of a burden on the helpers. Please, think it over.
