EARL WALSH' So I Hear A highlight in the past week was a visit to the home of Frank and Avis Gans. We talked of many things, past and present-- mostly past days in the history of McHenry. Starting to sit on a straight back chair, Frank directed me to the most comfortable chair in the room He didn't have to twist my arm Having to leave was my problem Injuries are more prevalent in baseball than one would expect Our Sox lost three regulars and hit the skids The latest and perhaps hardest hit are the Milwaukee Brewers. When you take Molitor (second baseman converted to centerfielder) and Yount (shortstop deluxe) out of the lineup, both hitting and fielding suffer After looking terrible on the road, the White Sox came home to win, causing Harry Caray to remark, "There's nothing like home cooking". Pity the poor Cubs With two thousand people in the "park, they can't pay ex penses Some days it doesn't pay to open the gates Maybe a player strike is just what they need The Sunday paper arrived and. after reading the sports page. Dick Tracy and Dear Abby. I picked up a section that warned about drinking coffee for breakfast, The noted authority tells us to wait until 3 or 4 o'clock in the afternoon before hitting the coffee pot No use I'd never make it to afternoon "The most important thing a father can do for his children Is love their mother " -Contributed The weatherman didn't add anything to Mother's Day Weatherwise the day was lousy »•, "* Thought Arnold Rauen had left the country, but he came home last week looking hale and hearty I don't think that tan came from a sun lamp "For this I bless you most" That vmi pivp PAGE 7 much and know not That you give at all " PLAINDEALER -JVFDNESDAY. MAY 13. 1*1 certainly a chance for all ages to participate -Gibran Couldn't help thinking of the saying "You've come a long way. baby" when I read the Parks and Recreation Program sent out by Director Pete Merkel Meaning, of course, the program has come a long way under Pete's direction . Years back the City of McHenry and the two school districts each paid fifty dollars a month to hire Mac" to supervise summer plav in the Pearl St park Only a handful of kids showed interest and the plan fell by the wayside Of course, there is a fee for most of the programs, but With the ducks holding up traffic on the streets, some people have given McHenry the new name Duckville. Now. some have come up with the name Park City. . ' ]j We certainly have park facilities. Now comes^a'-swimming pool With beaches closed so much of the time, a pool became a necessity to those who enjoy a dip Recreation should ward off a lot of problems where some have - s<iid there is nothing to "do in McHenry Parks cost money, but should do a lot of good You are an Old Timer if you can remember bathrooms with chains Marian Coach Quits A NEAR MISS - Linda Davidson of Johnsburg cleared the bar in this high Jump attempt, but she just missed the next height and could not advance in the IHSA district track meet Friday. Davidson's teammate, Cheri Kofler, earned a trip to this week's state meet in two events. Kofler will be going to state for the third consecutive year. STAFF PHOTO - WAYNE GAYLORD Kofler Does It Again 'Canes Fare Well Johnsburg track star Cheri Kofler earned a trip to the state meet for the third straight year with an out standing performance at the IHSA class A district meet Friday The junior thinclad won the long jump with a leap of 5.13 meters and placed second in the 100 meter dash in 12 68 seconds. A first- or second-place finish in any event qualifies a competitor for state The meet will be held this Friday and Saturday at Charleston, 111 "It's the second time she has qualified for state in two events." said Johnsburg coach Pat McCrystal. "Cheri has qualified in the long jump three times. Unless something terrible happens, she should go nexL. year as well." Kofler just missed qualifying in a third event when she ran in the 200 meter dash. She placed third in that race with a time of 27 2 seconds The Skyhawks earned several other places in the 22-leam meet, which was held at Lisle. Inge Dschida was fourth in the shot put with a toss of 9 15 meters and was sixth in the discus with a distance of 26.68 meters. Sue Moulis was sixth in the 800 meters at 2:298 and Bridget Thorne was eighth in the 200 meter hurdles in 36 8 seconds The Skyhawks placed seventh as a team, com piling 15 points. University School of Chicago won the meet. Scorecard By Jeff Stern It's embarassing to have to say it. but a clerk in a grocery store caught me red- handed the other day. The woman looked at me over the top of her spectacles and grinned "Let me guess." she said "The baseball cards are for your younger brother." Curses, foiled again For the umpteenth time in my life I was caught while in dulging myself in one of my favorite hobbies, collecting baseball cards. It seems innocent enough to me. but some people just don't understand the historical importance of collecting baseball cards This obsession began quite a few years ago. when I saw a newspaper article about card collectors One fellow owned a Honus Wagner card so rare that it was virtually priceless The story went on to say that a card picturing --•••-•COUPON" Hank Aaron batting left- handed instead of right- handed also commanded a princely sum Thus my interest in baseball cards was cemented I started my collection that very day. Although it has not grown by leaps and bounds over the years. I am proud of what I have For instance, I picked up one of those rare left-handed rAaron cards somewhere along the way I think I had to give up a Marv Thron; berry and a couple Yogi Berras to get it, but it was wortli it Strange as it may seem, the cards of the more popular players are not always the best The fellow who disappears after one or two seasons can make or break a collection. I have amassed hundreds of these, including such big names as Ozzie Chavarria, Orlando McFarlane and Jimmy Coker to name a few Another boon to the baseball card entrepreneur is collecting an entire set in a given year This can be done one of two ways. You can send away to card com panies or private parties who buy in bulk Or you can purchase the cards piece by piece, pack by pack This leads to embarassing situations such as the one I mentioned above, but that is half the fun * Besides, those cards were for my younger brother, who has also caught the fever He came just 20 cards short • >f owning a complete set last year He is also the proud owner of a rare Roberto Clemente card cut from the bottom of a cupcake box. With luck one of us will reach our goal of collecting an entire set of cards If not, there is always next year Now. will anybody out there swap a Sandy Koufax card for a Lew Burdette" The news out of Marian Central was all good last week, as the baseball and softball teams both played extremely well and won West Suburban Catholic Conference games. In ad dition. McHenry resident Scott Truckenbrod captured a conference tennis crown. Truckenbrod won the number three singles crown by beating Benet's entrant in the finals. 2-6, 6-2, 6-1. Truckenbrod's victory helped the Hurricanes to a fourth place finish in the eight-team league Chris Kdelman at number two singles and Paul Olzak and Chris Hesch at second doubles lost in the semi finals. .Jeff Ladd. number Spengel Wins Keith Spengel of McHenry has qualified for the national Amateur Athletic Union <AAU) karate tournament, to be held in Cape Cod, Mass. in June Spengel. a member of the Northwest Suburban Karate Association, earned the right lo advance by competing in the AAU's regional April 26. About 70 persons competed and 10 from the Northwest Suburban group advanced. In addition to his qualification for nationals. Spengel won second place for his expertise in "kata," which are karate forms That performance earned him a silver medal in the junior division Member schools of the Northwest Suburban association are Round Lake Park District. Camp Duncan YMCA. Des Plaines Park District. Westmont Park District, Rolling Meadows high school and district 214 high school one singles, and the doubles team of Jim Hertrich and Paul Brian Kelly lost in the first round. Joyce Kennebeck threw the first no-hitter in school history Thursday as the Hurricane softball team split a twinbill with Montini Kennebeck blanked Montini in the Marian's 21-0 romp The Hurricane pit cher got plenty of help in her no-hitter Nancy Walsh made a nice running catibh in the fourth inning and Marge Bokowy dug out a low throw at first base for the final out of the game. Montini won the opener of the doubleheader. 9-8 Steve Wett cracked an inside-the-park homer to boost Marian to its first baseball victory of the season. 7-6 over Driscoll. The win was also the first for rookie coach Karl Mathews The Hurricanes had 11 nits, including two each by Wett. Chet Kopec, Don Roughan and Tim Sherwood.
