A sunny smile from Mother Nature Saturday, May 2, helped make the Girl Scouts sponsored Nickel Day a huge success The annual neighborhood event has become one that is an ticipated by all Girl Scouts in the area and many of them devote meeting time during the year to making prizes to be sold for a nickel. A cake walk and painted faces added to the festivities Troop No. 464 recently made ice cream using the old hand crank method and the fun project resulted in a£ delicious treat. This troop also joined other scouts, planting a tree at Valley View school The girls in Troop No 461 adopted grandparents as a troop project and found that doing little things for them during the year, such as sending greeting cards, was a very rewarding experience for all involved. Troop No. 408 enjoyed a tour of the nature center at Moraine Hills and a hike to the dam. Recent activities of Troop No. 414 included a picnic at the Pear) street park and a tour of the McHenry Post Office and Police depart ment The girls helped stuff Easter eggs for the Easter Egg Hunt held by the Parks and Recreation department of the city and invited Sally Joosten to attend one of their meetings with some of her baby animals. Troop No. 143 met with a ranger from the Con servation department to plant trees at the Spring Grove park. A highlight of one of the meetings for Troop No. 480 was a visit by an exchange student from Sweden who told them all about that country. During interest groups in Troop No. 406. the girls prepared first aid kits "in cans and made needlepoint bookmarks Members of Troop No. 410 spent a lot of time preparing for Nickle day. They made bracelets, necklaces and a variety of pom-pom animals to sell for a nickle and were in charge of the face painting booth. - They met with Brownie Troop No. 211 and worked on a Junior Aide patch and Bridge to Juniors patch Outings planned include a roller rink party, father-daughter bowling and pizza night, and a campout at Chapman Hills the middle of June. Another neighborhood service involving many of the Girl Scouts in the area will be performed Saturday. May 16. when the girls will plant flowers in about 50 barrels arranged at various locations for the beautification of the city and the enjoyment of all.
