PAGE 8 - PLAINDEALER • WEDNESDAY, MAY 20.1961 mm Twice Told Tales | FIFTY YEARS AGO . (Taken from the files of May 14. 1931) The members of the high school orchestra, with their directors. Miss Minnich and W.N. Sears, left on their trip to Cleveland, where they expect to compete for national honors in Class C of the national orchestra contest. McHenry county again received mention on the front pages of the Chicago papers regarding daylight saving time. According to reports, the war in the county over the adoption of daylight saving time was being waged merrily. Those retaining standard time are Harvard, Hebron, Rich mond, Marengo, Huntley and Algonquin, while Woodstock, McHenry, Fox River Grove, Crystal Lake and Cary have adopted daylight saving time. Woodstock seems to be having really more of a mixup over the change in time than McHenry did, with the theatre operating on standard time and the stores keeping various hours. FORTY YEARS AGO < Taken from the files of May 15, 1941.) McHenry township is to get three different stretches of blacktop road under a program adopted by the County board. Another is a stretch leading from the west end of the Johnsburg bridge ex tending north one-quarter of a mile to the concrete at Hettermann's corner. The other piece is about three blocks long and extends from the old McHenry bridge south to connect with Route 120. Johnsburg lost a wild and wooly baseball game to Richmond by a score of 14 to 13. Adding machine totals show further that each team scattered 13 hits over the premises. - TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 10. 1956) Miss Marge Freund. daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A.P. Freund, was one of a targe class of St. Mary's College school of Nursing and Holy Cross' Central School of Nursing in Notre Dame, Ind., to be honored in the cap and cape investiture ceremony. Koleto explains the course will be divided into four sections of study. The first will focus on the history of astronomy and the second on our own solar system, he said. The third section will deal with other stars and galaxies including discussion of quasars, black holes, pulsars and neutron stars. The final section. Koleto said, will involve Cosmology, the study of what we think happened in the universe a long time ago and what we think is going to happen in the distant future. Those who sign up for the class should have had high school algebra, Koleto said, but he added the course will not be as rigorous as many other science courses He said he hopes to include field trips in the class There will be some use of telescopes in the lab sessions. Many of those who have already signed $ up for the course are local residents who are interested in learning more about astronomy rather that current MCC students, Koleto noted. The North Central association accreditation team, consisting of four administrative and teaching members from out-of-state community colleges, gave the college a quality stamp for adequately fulfilling goals set by the college it self. Accreditation is a process of voluntary self- regulation designed to im prove the quality of the college. The team told the staff and trustees that they will make a recom mendation to the North Central association that MCC's status as an ac credited college be reaf firmed and be reexamined in 1986. By state law. the Illinois Community College Board (ICCB) evaluates the policies and procedures of all Illinois community colleges every six years. The compliance-type evaluation takes place to determine if the college qualifies for state funding.
