Brings Honor To Home Town John (Jack) Wirt* directs hit Oak Park-River Forest M- where they appeared In concert with an Austrian school member high school orchestra prior to their trip to Vienna, chorus. In April of 1961, in Vienna, Austria, one of McHenry high school's graduates brought honor to his former school and his early violin teacher, Sister Andreella, for merly of St. Mary's. John (Jack) Wirtz, head of the music department of Oak Park-River Forest high school in Oak Park, and director of his 60- member orchestra on a European concert tour This was the sixth tour he has sponsored, and it was in this one that he reached his zenith. Wirtz was issued a special invitation by Dr. Alfred Schultz, principal of Akademisches Gym nasium of Vienna, to direct his orchestra in concert with the Austrian school's chorus under the direction of Wolf Peschl. the concert was held in the famed Vienna Kon- zerthaus, marking a precedent for this hall. Never before had a high school orchestra been invited to perform in the Konzerthaus. The program was devoted exclusively to the works of American and Austrian composers. The Austrian Federal Ministry df Education expressed interest and approval in this concert to promote contact and understanding between the youths of the two , nations. Fifteen hundred people attended the concert and received the program with standing ovations. Dr. Schultz noted the high quality of the per formance of the or chestra and its conductor. Other concerts on the tour were given at Idar- Oberstein, Schwa bisch hall, and Kitabuhel. Jack is the son of Mrs. Alida Wirtz and the late Tony Wirtz. He is married to the former Katherine Freund. Jack's mother, with Mrs. Helen Miller, and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Shadel, all of McHenry, were privileged to take the tour and share in the accolades bestowed upon a former McHenryite.
