McHenry's latest acquisition the new baseball park, was the scene of much activity at the playing of the first game of the season, when the local team won a victory over the Elgin Legion. Walter J. Freund witnessed the realization of his fondest hopes and plans in the completion of the baseball park for which he has worked these many months and who was in strumental in obtaining the present location for the ball park and giving McHenry its recreation center. McHenry has gained another distinction through one of its residents for "Poems" is the simple in scription in letters of gold which appears upon the volumes of poetry, just off the press for Miss Maud B. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 22, 1M1). At a special meeting, the City Council purchased road oil from the Lennarta Oil company, a firm that has oiled McHenry streets in most of the past 20 years. It is the plan of the street committee to patch the various bad spots with a special mixture since they do not deem it necessary to tear up the streets this year. The subject of widening the Green street bridge also came up for discussion with a decision to hire Engineer Kasser to submit preliminary plans and estimates. Concern over the safety of the old bridge and the narrow street at that point has long been on the minds of the council members. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 17, 1956). The McHenry county chapter of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis is sponsoring the appearance of Wayne King in the county with a show and dancing. Only 2,000 tickets are avilable so those interested are urged to secure theirs at once. The sixtieth anniversary of St. Mary's court No. 594, CatholiCjQrder of Foresters, will be observed May 27. Action taken by High School District 156 board indicated a policy of economy to be undertaken during the next school year. A decision was made to reduce the athletic budget by 99,500 over the present year. Other action will reorganize the community school program, in which the position of director will no longer be filled by one person but by staff members who will be compensated for extra service as they work on a part time basis. In a lengthy meeting the McHenry City Council resolved a list of problems and inquiries, several at equal importance. As previously outlined and reviewed, an ordinance was passed to vacate Wiltshire court in Whispering Oaks and a plat for Unit No. 6 was approved. A resolution to the State of Illinois Division of Waterways was adopted to authorize^application for permit to construct a piling wall along Boone creek adjacent to the municipal building.
