Evaluating a diamond has most young couples at a dis advantage particularly when it comes to what is known in the trade as know ing the diamond's "four c's" -- cut, color, clarity and carat weight These four elements determine the diamond's worth. Carat weight is the stand ard measure of diamond weight and is made up of 100 points. Often, a bride-to-be will choose anengagement ring that has a center stone flanked with smaller stones. The jeweler should give the carat weight of the center stone and the carat weight of the flanking stones. While choosing a ring, style can be a deciding fac tor. as certain styles are more becoming to specific hand shapes. Square hands are flattered by slim, taper ing designs, small hands look best with delicate styles and lean hands can take a large, elaborate ring. In addition to choosing a specific cut, the bride-to-be may favor a modern setting or antique or like tion of white and yellow gold. Often couples will have the engagement ring en graved. When the engage ment ring is chosen, the wedding band is often cho sen so that the two designs complement each other.
