With traditional weddings, complete with prenuptial show ers to formal receptions, return ing to favorthese days, it is most appropriate that this special wedding cake has as one of its prime ingredients Amaretto di Saronno, which was first made as a token of love in the six teenth century by a young woman in Saronno, Italy. This spirit, which has lasted through the centuries, was created for Bernardino Luini, an artist of the Leonardo da Vinci School who was painting a fresco in the chapel of the Sanctuary of Santa Maria della Grazie in Saronno. The young woman was the model for the Madonna in the fresco--which is still on view today--and, in the true spirit of love, she concocted this intrigu ing liqueur. Now in the 1980s the Sar onno Love Cake, a symbol of love, is a fitting conclusion to the marriage ceremony, a tradi tion of love.
