by Joey Sasso CONFIDENTIAL REPORT: Sexy Michele Lee, the tough- talking Karen Fairgate of CBS-TV's smash series "Knots Landing," admits her 15-year marriage to actor James Farentino seems to be over. But, she emphasizes, "there is no bitterness, no fighting. We just sat down, talked things over and agreed to separate. We're still great friends. And I think we always will be." Her hus band agrees. Farentino, who won high praise recently for his brilliant portrayal of Argentinian dictator Juan Peron in NBC's docu-drama "Evita Peron," says that Michele is "a great lady." He adds: "She's bright, quick-witted, and she has a terrific sense of humor; Our son is a lot like her and I'm very proud of him." So what went wrong? Michele, who'll share custody of son David, 11, under the friendly split, says bluntly: "It's the old Hollywood story--career before love. Marriage would have been much easier if I'd married someone other than an actor. When you're married to someone in show business, you're competing against him. Also, there are long separations. Sometimes I would be off at the studios 14 hours a day for days on end and Jim would be home gnashing his teeth. When I finally got home at night, he'd complain. I'd say it wasn't my fautt and in no time flat we'd be into a screaming fight." In Hollywood, Farentino is known as a completely dedicated actor, who'll accept only roles he sees as a worthwhile challenge. "I don't do junk work just for money," he snaps. "Garbage is gar bage no matter how a studio tries to disguise it." TV BACKSTAGE: There's a secret older woman in Bobby Ewing's life--she's his real-life wife, Carlyn. Only their closest friends knew there was a 10-year age difference between "Dallas" star Patrick Duffy and Carlyn--though they both claim there was really no effort made to keep it hushed up. In fact, Duffy has nothing but praise for older women. "They have confidence and maturity I find ap pealing," says Duffy, 31. Carlyn's a former ballerina who has kept her girlish figure, and with her page-boy blonde hairdo looks much younger than her 41 years. During the years before her hubby's career took off she worked as the breadwinner while he stayed home cooking, cleaning and shopping. TV CLOSEUP: The American people are a group that can quickly comprehend a danger. That I can say with authority. Here's my story: I interviewed Vladimire Mare about his new book entitled "Wake Up or Die, America!" The author spent 10 years dodging congressmen and senators and agency administrators questioning and researching for the book. The result is an outpouring of mail asking, 'What can we do to help?', 'Who can we write to?' My suggestion to what you can do is simply learn as much as you can about the problems that face America in the 80's and who could be a better teacher than a man who questioned presidential and senatorial candidates, including Mr. Reagan, about time running out and reaching the point of no return. Keep those cards and letters coming. The publisher of 20th Century Books (745 Seventh Avenue, New York, N.Y 10019) and I will forward them to Mr. Mare, the author of "Wake Up or Die, America!"
