There a suitor with a peanut allot ment is, as they say. "money in the bank." Why this should interest you is because you're paying for this lunacy both in taxes and at the grocery store Here's how it works After many farms failed in the Depression, the federal government moved in to bolster agriculture. The government said peanuts could only be grown on about one million acres of land across the entire country. Almost all of this land was in Georgia. Florida, the Carolinas, Texas. Virginia and Oklahoma People who owned this land were given allotments - 10 acres to one, 100 acre^ to another Now as time passed, many of these owners have died gp given up farming So they sell or lease the land to others. Over 70 percent of the current peanut farmers do not own the land they farm They rent it and what a price they pay! Normal crop land rental is about $25 to $30 an acre But peanut allotment land brings $200 an acre and even more when it's irrigated. Who benefits from this form of governmental con trol? Not the farmer who sweats and works and prays. This farmer who rents land cannot complain about this feudal system because he loses his opportunity to farm the next year. Not the consumer who sees this cost in every jar of Skippy or every Baby Ruth bar. And especially not the govern ment who underwrites a program that is a form of slavery and totally opposed to a free market economy. But some do benefit. They're called the Peanut lx>rds in the South and they are fighting to retain this system George Washington Carver thought the growing of peanuts could be a nutritious and inexpensive food source of the southern poor Now third world nations seek to buy this high protein food But the dream is becoming a nightmare. Hopefully, Congress will act Secretary of Agriculture John Block wants to end this governmental control but those southern states don't and it's a shame. It's wrong and someday right will prevail if thinking in dividuals take a long hard look at inequitable situations such as this. George R. Justen & Sonv funeral home.
