Extensive plans are in the making for annual Marine day and carnival on July 26- 29. Highlights of the four-day event will include rides, games, boat parades and novelty boat races. A total of 35 incoming freshmen are included on the list of Presidential and Regents scholarship winners that has been released by Loras college. The Johnsburg school board recognized the achievements of several Junior high and high school students at a recent board meeting. These outstanding students were praicec lo:* their talents, skills and endeavors in the areas of journalism, creativity, math, science and student government. Ruth Pflug, sophomore, was honored for her achievement as a sports reporter for the award winning Johnsburg Weekly News. Ruth received a second place award from the Eastern Illinois High School Press association for her article, "Most Athletes Drink", which appeared in a special edition of the school paper on alcohol in December, 1980. The Johnsburg Weekly News, produced by 24 dedicated, hard working journalism students under the direction of faculty adviser Randy Swikle, was also recognized for its "first class" rating in a recent contest sponsored by the National Scholastic Press association of the University of Minn*";'..:. The sf:hool paper r« cerr' 5 two ' out of 4) marks of distinction, one for design and one for opinion content, which is established by Randy Wakitseh, editor in chief. The paper is financially independent, raising $3,000 yearly in advertising to pay for publishing costs. It is distributed free to students and sold for a modest price at Itrart business establish ments. Swikle said he was very proud of the staff and agreed with the comment of a recent North Central evaluator, saying that the paper was one of "the best" ever ob served. The NSPA stated, "The editorials are bright and lively, and the staff is not afraid to take a stand." Tom scored higher than most high school seniors in vocabulary and 8 points from senior level in math. As a result, he received a special award and will be eligible to par ticipate in classes for the gifted being held a at MCC this summer Tom will be taking instruction in wave theory and electronics In the future, he plans on studying computer science as his career goal Jill Jurik, seventh grade, second-term treasurer of the Junior high student council, was praised for her ap pointment as district representative of the Illinois Junior High Student Council association.
