MAIN ST. ^ McHENRY ^ (LOCATED BEHIND CHRISTOPHER'S MENS WEAR) OPEN FRIDAY Til »:30 WEDNESDAY. JUNE 11.1*1 with the tens of thousands of, "Big Brothers." To millions of youngsters. Father is a •'figure" who com bines warmth and understand ing with a "knowledge of everything." He is a combina tion pal. teacher, disciplinar ian, provider and protector. • In all of recorded history Father's essential role remains unchanged, yet it has been broadened with the develop ment of social sciences, into a more humanistic personality with all-encompassing respon sibilities. We can't very well dodge the fact that more and more fami lies are foundering on the rocks of divorce and separation. The incalculable damage wrought on children is awe some. Yet. in many of the un happy circumstances, it is the devoted Father, who steps up and in. to perform the "total role"--of both Father and Mother. From a greater well of com passion. many modern Fathers, abetted by today's new psycho logical understanding, help build a bridge of transition from the cocoon of sheltered family life, into a twilight No Man's Land, lacking the secure anchor of parents living in harmony in a family social unit. It's not easy. It's tough on Dad. It's tough on Mother. It's, perhaps, toughest on the chil dren. Here, the responsibility on a sincere Father weighs heaviest. as he tries to fulfill a dual role. For his is still the trust of molding a young mind to matu rity, so that the next generation might be more fortunate than his. Look, too, to the thousands of "parentless," as opposed to orphan children, who need the comfort and security of a good home. The "Foster Father." under whatever circumstances, fills the void, often with the same love and concern as a biological parent. And, with the abrupt jshift in social codes and mores, the problem is more likely, rather than less likely, to increase. For the family without chil dren of their own. Foster Fa therhood. and often. Adoptive Fatherhood, is an answer to the needs of the Father, and his family, as well as the child in need of love, guidance, help and home. Once the child without Fa ther or Mother became the charge of the tribe or clan. The development of a new govern mental responsibility'toward everyone has engendered a re turn to those concepts. That's why there are so many more youngsters enjoying the benefits of a close father rela tionship to(Jfy than just a few decades ago, when they were isolated in "orphanages." We've a long way to go, but we recognize our role and our responsibilities. Being a "good Father";--by whatever rela tionship--is an emerging re ward, as well as responsibility, of modem society.
